As we come back to school, we’re honoring one of our students’ (and teachers’!) favorite artists: Yayoi Kusama and her legacy🎨✨

Born in Japan in 1929, Kusama began experiencing vivid visions as a child, inspiring the endless dots, nets, and patterns that became her signature style. Repeating these patterns became a way for her to make sense of what she was experiencing and find a sense of calm and control through art.

We love exploring that same idea: how repetition, pattern, color, and creativity can help us slow down and express ourselves.

What a day! 🎉 The opening ceremony for the Shared Arts Center was such a special celebration of the arts and creativity in San José. 🎨✨

We are so grateful to all of the partners, supporters, and community members who helped bring this vision to life, especially Executive Director of Starting Arts, Ann Watts. We’re beyond excited for everything to come and for all of the creativity, connection, and inspiration that will fill our new home!

We’re so lucky to have incredible teaching artists bringing fun, engaging lessons to students that blend art history, SEL, literature, world cultures, innovation, and so much more.

We brought a little creativity and a lot of wellness to a Professional Development session with 20 leaders from the Santa Clara County Office of Education!

Participants explored the latest research on neural reset and then got hands-on with watercolor and colored Sharpies to create their own neurographic art, abstract paintings and patterns designed to help the brain relax, reset, and recharge. 🧠🌈

And the feedback says it all:

“I really wasn’t sure if I would do this today as I had so much work to do. But I cannot believe how this let me escape. I feel so incredible right now.”

Sometimes, giving your brain permission to play is exactly what it needs 💛

Back to school ALREADY?! 👀🎨

Our young artists are kicking off the school year by bringing their imaginations to life!
Students designed and sculpted their very own clay monsters, inspired by the fun and creativity of movies like Monsters, Inc. We use A.I. to imagine what their creatures would look like if they could come alive!

Students even get to create their monster’s story, superpower, signature sound, and personality. Scary fun! 👹✨

Join us as we celebrate the opening of our new creative home! 🎉

Our Grand Opening on Sunday August 23rd will feature a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 11:15 AM with the Mayor, building tours, hands-on art activities, refreshments, and more!

We’d love for you to celebrate this exciting milestone with us as we open the doors to a welcoming new space for artists, families, and the San José community.

Throughout the event, attendees will have the opportunity to experience a preview of our arts classes led by professional teaching artists, offering a firsthand look at the creative programming the Center will provide for youth and adults alike.

Another highlight from Art, Nature & Horse Camp, our young artists explored the art of textile making with our wonderful teacher Angie ✨, discovering how fabric can become a canvas for creativity, storytelling, and self-expression.

Angie dyes and prints her textiles using plants, minerals, and the earth’s own pigments. Each cloth is the record of a real process: leaves pressed to fabric, color drawn from root and bark. Students gathered leaves, flowers, and other natural materials to create one-of-a-kind botanical prints, discovering the beauty of nature through art and hands-on exploration. 🌿🍃

☀️ Summer Time! ☀️

Thanks to a generous grant from Supervisor Susan Ellenberg, we were able to continue our Free Summer Programs at the Library!

From building and designing cities and amusement parks, to creating clay animals inspired by literature, and our favorite, designing shoes to bring to life with AI, we have had an amazing time creating.

We provide healthy meals and snacks while creating a safe, fun, and welcoming space for kids and teens to learn, create, and connect, all completely free!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this summer programs so special! 🎨💙
