Bioneers 2025 | Day 2 was nothing short of mind-expanding. The conversations kept flowing, the sparks kept flying, and we found ourselves pulled deeper into the kind of future-thinking that makes you want to act now.

At Bioneers, we explored groundbreaking work from Project CETI and NYU’s More-Than-Human Life program, where scientists, linguists, and technologists are collaborating to decode whale communication using AI, marine biology, and cryptography. These discoveries invite us to rethink our relationship with the natural world — not as silent observers, but as respectful listeners. With such powerful tools at hand, we were reminded that innovation must be guided by empathy, to protect and uplift nonhuman life rather than exploit it.

We also learned from experts in environmental health about the dangers of “forever chemicals” such as PFAS in everyday household products — substances that linger in our environment and bodies. The message was clear: by becoming more conscious consumers and putting collective pressure on companies, we can work toward removing these toxic chemicals from supply chains for good.

At the .film screening, we were moved by stories of resilience and resistance in Los Angeles—where local leaders are reclaiming food systems through community-rooted solutions. From food justice to food sovereignty, we saw how change starts when people reconnect with the land, with each other, and with the meals on their tables.

From the microscopic to the cosmic, we learned this: the more we listen— to the land, to each other, and even to the whales—the better we understand what it means to care.

The first day at Bioneers 2025 sparked deep reflection and powerful calls to action.

Baratunde Thurston opened with a reminder: in a world overwhelmed by crisis, our narratives matter more than ever. The way we see our connection to the earth, each other, and even technology shapes the future we create.

Shreya Chaudhuri inspired us with a return to the roots of climate solutions — Indigenous science. Her message was clear: youth movements are rising to decolonize environmental action and honor the knowledge that has sustained our planet for generations.

In the AI panel, we confronted the urgent question of tech’s ecological footprint. As Silicon Valley races ahead, we must ask: at what cost to the planet?

We’re leaving Day 1 feeling challenged and hopeful, ready to keep building toward justice, sustainability, and shared futures. 🌱🌊

Part 2
In collaboration with , the HonorsX students and peer mentors had the chance to attend a Low Maintenance Composting Workshop over the weekend. At this event, they learned of various low-maintenance solutions, such as Bokashi composting, tumbler composting, and cold bin composting, to address food waste in their households to mitigate food waste ending up in landfills and help to ensure a more sustainable future. Additionally, the team was able to attend a community potluck afterwards and tour the Garden to Table SV facilities, where they were exposed to the variety of seasonal produce grown at their facilities.
