SPECIAL EVENT! LOCAL AUTHOR, DANIEL SAYRE!!
May 20, TUESDAY 8:45 A.M. CLASS

Location: 3151 Union Ave., San Jose 95124 (campus of Trinity Presbyterian Church).

I'm excited to announce that we'll have an author visit from Daniel Sayre, author of Becoming Glitch and Finding Silvereyes (superhero novels) on Tuesday, May 20 during DENISE BOIKO'S 8:45 a.m. British Literature class. Because that is our last week of classes, there will also be class party goodies available, so it should be a fun time for all. Daniel will be talking about how he creates superpowers for his heroes, using physics principles...but then twisting them a bit. There will be a bit of time for Q&A and/or talking about the creative writing process.

Daniel is a homeschool grad and is a Christian--and his books are fascinating and gripping. If the name sounds familiar, he is the brother of Alina Sayre (also a homeschool grad), author of the Voyages of the Legend fantasy series.

Please invite friends who are checking out Emmaus Road, since Daniel's presentation will be interesting and engaging. If you're coming, please let me know ahead of time so we can set up enough tables and have enough goodies. Daniel will have some of his books available for purchase and will autograph books. Even if you can't come, please tell others about his books. He truly appreciates the word-of-mouth publicity.

Here is Denise Boiko's review of Daniel's second book, Finding Silvereyes (fun fact: she edited the book):

Daniel Sayre has done it again with an engaging, can’t-put-it-down superhero novel that attracts readers well beyond the scope of the traditional “superhero” audience. He’s cooked up a gourmet recipe with all the appealing ingredients that readers are hungry for. A strong plot captures attention and comes dangerously close to shutting down the reader’s regular responsibilities (it may actually have crossed that line a few times). Characters that we love to love and love to hate, depending on which side of the conflict they are on, entertain us with their quirky traits and intensity, while constantly building suspense with both their victories and their vulnerabilities.

Sayre’s impressive ability to invent unexpected and creative “enhancements” (superpowers) in both the protagonists and the villains leaves the reader scratching his or her head, wondering “How did he come up with that?” The humor and honesty of the stream-of-consciousness thoughts coming from the main character’s (Glitch’s) mind, as well as the serious and often anguished reflections of the new character, Silvereyes, draw the reader deep into the vortex of this new adventure.

Hello Parents and Students,

We hope you are doing well! This note comes to you from The Emmaus Road team and Camp Confidence leaders Emily Lodenquai and Juliet Calhoun. Emily and Juliet are experienced speech students and competitors, having spent years in speech and debate clubs, winning competitions, and leading youth speech camps.

🗣️ We are excited to announce our upcoming summer public speaking camp, Camp Confidence!!

This camp will focus on the basic skills in communication that are needed in everyday life.
We will also delve into some details for both interpretive speaking and platform speaking.

Both of these categories require one thing: confidence! 😃. That's exactly what we will help students gain.

During this camp, students will be expected to write or memorize and deliver their own short speeches. The speech coaches will give them feedback and encourage their practice.

At the end of the week, parents will be invited to watch their students deliver the speeches they have developed over the week.

ADDITIONALLY...

‼️☑️We are also glad to offer an optional training for students who are interested in competitive speech!

This will be an optional additional hour of training from 12:00pm-1:00pm each day of camp for those who sign up.

The added competitive speech training will only happen if the minimum number of students (4 students) sign up for the competitive training. The competitive speech training will go past the basic skills and practice more advanced drills for a speech competition.

Students will practice techniques of composition such as drafting, revision, and editing as they write literary analysis essays, as well as a research paper with MLA formatting, and as they prepare a creative project once per semester. Essays will be scored using a detailed rubric analyzing the student's accomplishments in the areas of content, organization, style, and mechanics.

MANDARIN LANGUAGE, taught by Sophia Cheung

Ms. Cheung offers Chinese instruction for any age group of students who would like to learn or improve their Chinese in listening, reading, or writing skills. Format may be one-on-one tutoring, semi-private lessons, or a small class if there is sufficient interest.

When the film starts to drag, every director knows that it is time to cut to the chase scene!

Dear homeschooling families, Happy Independence Day!

This week's Emmaus Road feature is about Electives. So cast your vote and step right up to exercise your right to choose the ideal elective course(s) this year!

This week, we're showcasing the plethora of fun and educational electives that are available at ER. Elective courses add "spice" to the educational recipe and make learning fun.

But here's the thing. These elective courses need a minimum number of students (~6, with some exceptions) for the teacher to offer them. So these teachers really need to know who's "in" so that they can plan for a fantastic class. If your student is interested, please sign up or contact the teacher ASAP. (And tell a couple of friends while you're at it.)

PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS, facilitated by Angela Chan

HOMESCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP
Do you find yourself accumulating countless questions about homeschooling high school with college in mind? How can you best support your student—not simply in taking classes to check off the list, but also in promoting meaningful conversations and prayer time about his/her potential career? This support group will provide a time for you to slow down and seek God’s guidance in revealing how He created your student, and how those giftings relate to his/her career down the road. What extracurricular activities should you emphasize? What community service activities are better than others? How do you integrate and build leadership experiences?
Your family’s decision to work toward transfer admission or toward freshman admission at a 4-year college will make a difference in the way you plan your homeschooling. Whether your first child is in middle school and you’re intimidated by homeschooling high school—or already in high school and you’re exploring options—this support group seeks to provide answers and clarity to your family’s homeschool journey. Consistent meeting times guided by “veterans” will help you address your questions and concerns. You’ll not only receive ongoing support in how to navigate the high school years, but you will also experience the joy and peace of bringing your concerns to our Almighty God as we integrate prayer time for our children and ourselves.

SUPPORT GROUP FOR PARENTS IN COLLEGE APPS SEASON
Are you overwhelmed and intimidated by the thought of helping your high school senior apply for college? Whether you’re doing this for the first time, or you just want to receive some guidance and help, the goal of this support group is to help you complete the tasks bit by bit so that you are not swamped as the deadlines approach.

We will talk about the advantages of applying Early Action, the pros and cons of Early Decision, the Common App, and the UC and CSU apps. We will also set aside some time for you to get started on your counselor’s recommendation letter and to understand how you can support your student in gathering his/her information as early as possible. Join us and meet other families with high school seniors as we tackle college apps and pray for God’s sovereign guidance for our students and ourselves.

[PUBLIC SPEAKING] Will be offered only if we find a teacher (and we are in discussion with someone now about it) -- and if we have sufficient student interest - please contact us with any ideas.

Check out the Emmaus Road website to get details on these courses and many others.

Blessings,

In this post, we'd like to highlight our History and Social Science offerings for 2024-25. It can be challenging to find a Christ-focused yet robust and practical history or government course that's offered in-person with an engaging variety of learning methods. But we have three in the works for the coming year!

GOVERNMENT & ECONOMICS, taught by the Rev. Mark Lauer, founder of the Emmaus Road (counts as 1 semester of US Government and 1 semester of Economics).

The class uses lecture, game play, team projects, and printed text material from Notgrass History, as well as video and printed instructional material from Hillsdale College. Students will learn governing principles from the Bible and various historical models, with most emphasis on USA history and structure of government.
Student projects include a variety of small projects to communicate different forms of governing structures, as well as creating a Measure or Proposition (as if for a state or local election) and presenting that ballot offering to the class. The term ends with the students working in teams on a major project to create a country and a government structure to lead that country. The Economics course is held in the spring term and is structured the same way, with the final project being the team development of a game(s) which helps communicate economic concepts the students have learned.

AMERICAN HISTORY, taught by Jody Goff (counts as 1 year of American History)

This course explores American history from the 1500s to 1910, focusing on “the characters, events, theology, literature, art, and religious beliefs of the nation.”

American History is a one-year class that consists of:

• 26 lessons (5 videos per lesson, 25 total hours); 4 projects; Student Reader; Weekly Exams; Year-long Portfolio (the portfolio projects will offer a chance to display learning in a deeper, more creative and individualized way).

WESTERN CIVILIZATION, taught by Jody Goff (counts as 1 year of World History)

This course explores world history from 1600 to 2000, focusing on Modernity and the maturity of Western civilization. Students will learn how to apply and refine a Christian worldview to major developments in philosophy, science, and government; personalities such as Newton, Bach, Napoleon, and Austen; and movements including the Enlightenment, Darwinism, Nationalism, and Victorianism.

Modernity is a one-year class that consists of:

• 27 lessons (5 videos per lesson, 47 total hours); 4 projects; Student Reader; Weekly Exam; Year-long Portfolio (the portfolio projects will offer a chance to display learning in a deeper, more creative and individualized way).

When a name conveys the story and shapes the response

The name of our school comes from this Easter story in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 24 and verses 13-35. Two dejected disciples have heard reports that Jesus has risen from the dead and that his tomb was indeed found empty. Women in their group confirmed that angels reported to them that Jesus had risen and was no longer dead. For whatever their reasons, they chose not to stay in Jerusalem to see for themselves if the rumor was true. Rather, they chose to walk from Jerusalem on the Emmaus road.

Along the way, Jesus joins them, yet they do not recognize him. Jesus offers an important clarification about himself and the scriptures: the two disciples didn’t understand who Jesus was as Messiah or what the scriptures taught about him. Maybe they thought otherwise? Perhaps they followed Jesus because, as they say, he was a “great prophet” and did wondrous things. They held great hope in all he might do. They expected the redemption of their people. But they had all the facts mixed up and misapplied. Jesus opens their minds to understand him as Savior and all that the scriptures say about him, which includes suffering, dying and rising on the third day. While this happens, they are still unsure of who the man actually is! Only when they sit to eat and Jesus breaks bread while giving thanks is he revealed to them. The real Jesus, bodily and alive, is present and with them in a communion meal. Then he leaves them to process what they had just experienced. He raises them from dejection to wonder! He renews their faith to act as his witnesses in faithful response to that which he has just taught them! Only then, after he left them, do they realize something profound: “Were not our hearts burning within us as he talked with us along the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” It is as if they are saying, “We should have known it was him!” Their heats had ‘burned’ that way before.

How sobering it must be to learn you don’t understand the very person you follow or the scriptures you confess and affirm. But it was a regular misunderstanding with Jesus’s disciples. Jesus didn’t allow them to remain confused. He wants his disciples to understand exactly who he is, what the scriptures say, and how they should respond. “Repent and believe,” is a common theme in the gospels. The same misunderstandings can be true with people today, as well. They saw Jesus for who they wanted and assumed him to be, regardless of what he actually said. We can do the same today. We like Jesus to be safely within our grasp and reasoning. So often we “shape” Jesus to be who we understand so we can follow him knowingly and confidently- we are somewhat in charge, frankly— rather than being shaped by Jesus to understand him and follow him for who he has revealed himself to be— and therefore, even in wondrous joy, we often also follow in fear and trembling, because who knows what the living Lord Jesus might do next?!

They believed. Then they learned. Then they believed more deeply! And they responded! “It is true!” they declared to others after rushing back to Jerusalem.

This is the journey of a follower of Jesus. Believe, be filled with the Holy Spirit, follow, learn, believe more deeply, and follow Him more wondrously and empowered by his Spirit- it is true! The name of the school reflects this reality that Jesus’s real presence in our lives daily and in the sacraments we receive will shape how we think, learn, believe, act, and respond to him and to others in life. Even if the topics of study are chemistry, literature, history, or music, we learn together in community along the discipleship-shaped “Emmaus Road,” for all truth comes from God. Even in academics, we expect the Lord to meet us.
