Every week, our GC5 class lands in a new country. 🌍

So far they've collected stamps from several destinations — each one a week spent learning the flag, hearing words from a new language, and discovering what kids eat, play, and celebrate on the other side of the world.

And they've got the passport to prove it. Each child made their own — cover, photo, and visa stamps for every country visited. At 4 years old, flipping through it and saying "I've been there" does something real: it builds geographic awareness, early cultural empathy, and the kind of confidence that comes from knowing a little more about the world than you did last week. ✈️

You've told them not to. They've done it anyway. And honestly? They were onto something.

Climbing the slide backwards is not mischief — it's the body doing exactly what it needs to do. That effort activates the vestibular and proprioceptive systems, builds core, upper and lower body strength, bilateral coordination, and motor planning, all at once, all without being asked.

And then there's the moment they reach the top. That look — part disbelief, part triumph — is what determination feels like at age two. The slide is hard. They fall, they try again, and every time they do, they are learning something no worksheet will ever teach them.

Next time you spot a little one going the wrong way up — maybe give them a moment. Their brain and body are working harder than it looks.

Some of the most important things that happen at childcare have nothing to do with letters or numbers.

Watch a group of two-year-olds long enough and you will see it: a child who keeps offering a toy to the same friend. A toddler who notices when someone is upset and toddles over to check. A pair who always find each other at snack time without anyone organizing it.

This is friendship forming in real time — and it is one of the most remarkable things we get to witness every day.

At this age, children are learning the building blocks of every relationship they will ever have: how to get someone's attention, how to take turns, how to repair a moment that went wrong, how to show up for someone without being asked. These are not small things. These are the skills that will shape their friendships at ten, their teamwork at twenty, and the way they treat people for the rest of their lives.

And the connections themselves? Some of them stick. We have seen children meet in the infant room and still be friends years later. There is something quietly extraordinary about watching two people find each other for the first time — especially when they are eleven months old and the introduction involves a disputed wooden block. 🧸

A Professional Development Day that could have been an email? That's not what a good PDD looks like.

A PDD at ScuttleBugs is hands-on. Teachers practice real scenarios instead of reading about them. They plan together, challenge each other, and try things that don't work in a room where it's safe to fail. They walk out with something concrete they can use the next morning — not a certificate of attendance and a branded pen.

For us, PDD days are the engine room. Few jobs carry more weight than the one of an early childhood educator — and the least we can do is keep getting better at it.

Yesterday, while the kids were home, our teachers were hard at work.
The team worked through curriculum development: mapping out the learning sequences that make sure each activity builds on the last, so that what looks like play is actually a carefully designed step toward a real skill.
They also practiced through role play — running through real classroom scenarios, working out how to respond to different behaviors, and sharpening the communication skills that make a teacher not just knowledgeable but genuinely effective in the room.
And to close the day: a guest speaker from the US Air Force, bringing a perspective on discipline and teamwork.

Buckets, sprinklers, and a whole lot of squealing — our toddlers have been making the most of the warm weather with outdoor water play as part of our summer program. Getting wet, pouring, splashing, and chasing water builds sensory awareness, gross motor coordination, and the kind of pure, unscripted joy that childhood is made of.
No screen, no script — just water, sunshine, and happy toddlers.

Our friends at ScuttleBugs Boulder have been exploring the people who keep our neighborhoods healthy and safe — and a few days ago they paid tribute to health workers through their own handmade collages.
What looks like an art project is also fine motor development, creative expression, and the beginning of empathy — children learning that some people spend their days taking care of others, and that this matters.

On August 1st, ScuttleBugs Boulder was proud to march alongside 50+ organizations and businesses in the Boulder County Parade in Longmont as part of the newly formed Brighter Start Coalition. We joined this coalition because we believe that access to quality early education shouldn't depend on a family's zip code or income — and that the people who care for Colorado's youngest children deserve to have a seat at the table when the decisions that affect them are made.

Thank you to The Early Childhood Council of Boulder County and Brighter Start Boulder County for bringing this community together. We're honored to march with you.
