The Creekside School

The Creekside School The Creekside School (TCS) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 private special education school for autism.

Our program is highly individualized to each student’s specific profile, where the goal for all students is to gain greater independence through the development of:
• Communication
• Positive behaviors/Self-regulation
• Relationships with others/social skills
• Community skills
• Functional Academic Skills

Using an eclectic, interdisciplinary approach, our philosophical foundation is based in the

DIR®/Floortime™ model. Though this model was originally intended for young children in clinical and/or home-based settings, TCS uses the principles of DIR® and Floortime™ within a curriculum appropriate for a school environment serving students at the elementary and middle school level. The Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR®/Floortime™) model is a framework that helps clinicians, parents and educators develop intervention programs tailored to the unique challenges and strengths of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental challenges. For more information on DIR®/ Floortime™, please visit
icdl.com or profectum.org

Part of using the DIR® framework includes individualizing each student’s educational program. This approach enables us to infuse components of a variety of educational and therapeutic interventions, including but not limited to: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), SCERTS® (focusing on Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, and Transactional Support), Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), and/or Relationship Development Intervention (RDI®), adapted to the individual needs of each student.

Hi, I'm Robert 👋. A little about me. I've wanted to be an educator for a long time, and even though special education wasn't always the plan, I took to it immediately. I've always had a strong passion for helping people, no matter what.

With a new student, it starts with just being there, being present, smiling, encouraging them, even for something small, like putting a water bottle away. It's letting them know you're a safe person to be with, and that you're here to help them grow. They may not fully understand that at first, but they feel it. And once that trust is there, you can get so much more out of them; it stops being "do this task" and becomes something you do together, because they trust you. Some days a student comes in ready for anything, and some days you just be there for them and take it one day at a time.

Thank you to the City of San José's Office of Racial and Social Equity for inviting The Creekside School to City Hall! Representatives from City Departments, including Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, the San José Public Library, and the San José Police listened as our Principal, Katie Shepard, shared what profound autism is and how the City can better support the profound autism community.

Here's a quick look at what we shared:
• What profound autism is and what meaningful support looks like
• How visual supports and augmentative and alternative communication devices help non-speaking individuals communicate
• Why all behavior is communication
• Best practices for accessible spaces, from clear signage to quiet break zones
• How community partnerships build true inclusion

We're so grateful to partner with our City to build a more inclusive San José for the families we serve. Thank you to everyone working to make our community a place where everyone belongs. 💙
