Election day, 2018!

Please join us in congratulating one of Kawayan Folk Arts founding board members in being elected to South San Francisco's city council last night. Many of our early meetings were in her home and we've always appreciated her genuine love of the performing arts and work in the community.

Mabuhay, Tita Flor!

"Sotu Nawa"
The literal translation of this phrase is "One Breath" in the T'boli Language.
Figuratively, this phrase can mean "unity." The T'boli people of SouthWestern Mindanao number between 100-120 thousand, roughly the same population as Daly City, California.

In the Philippines, October is recognized by presidential proclamation as National Indigenous People’s Month. According to the United Nations State of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the Philippines displaced many Lumad communities from their ancestral lands and promoted discrimination to support large-scale mining by foreign corporations and destructive projects.

Balikbayan and supporters in the United States can support the indigenous peoples by learning and sharing about Lumad schools and human rights, and donating.

Happy International Day of World's Indigenous Peoples!

To appreciate the diverse culture of the Philippines and its art forms, you must understand the geography and influences that have developed it's people. Practitioners of the ethnic arts are, by practice, anthropologists and must take responsibility to research and give back to these communities. The Lumad indigenous of Mindanao are subject to violent intervention and assimilation. To love their art forms requires that we recognize their humanity.

Join Kawayan Folk Arts musicians tonight in closing out our PCN music season at 's Pilipino Cultural Night in Hayward. Today and tomorrow 5/18-5/19!

Students at Local Colleges and Universities in the United States express their experiences as Filipino-Americans, exploring both modern and traditional performing arts, social issues, and tell stories of their families and friends, and their experiences of Barangay, Barkada, & balikbayan.

Some students will go on to join local dance and music companies. For others, their paths may never participate in cultural arts again. We're happy to support and participate in these experiences.

Many congratulations to the Filipino community at CSUEB!
