USS Hornet Museum Board member Chuck Myers reads a commendation from the County of Alameda recognizing the nine student authors of One Way Mission: The Doolittle Raid and the Chinese Rescue during the book launch aboard the USS Hornet Museum. Before an audience of students, families, and museum guests, Myers honored the young authors for their scholarship and efforts to preserve the shared World War II history of the United States and China.

Student author Ethan Cheung, 17, signs copies of One Way Mission: The Doolittle Raid and the Chinese Rescue during the book launch aboard the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda. Researching the book gave Cheung a deeper appreciation for the raid’s impact on Americans following Pearl Harbor. “I learned lots of new information about the raid and its effects that I hadn’t known before,” Cheung said. “I never fully grasped how heartening the raid was for American civilians left reeling from Pearl Harbor.”

Audrey Li of Kentucky, one of nine student authors of One Way Mission: The Doolittle Raid and the Chinese Rescue, holds the newly published book during its launch at the USS Hornet Museum. After collaborating remotely with her fellow student authors for the past year, the three-day Bay Area book tour marked the first time Li met many of her co-authors in person, turning a long-distance research collaboration into closer friendships while celebrating their work together.
