Viva CalleSJ “Parks to Roses" Route Returns This Sunday
San José’s largest park takes over the streets for the day
SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 6, 2024) – The City of San José Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) Department is excited to present the third and final Viva CalleSJ of 2024. This free and fun open-streets event invites residents to bike, skate, and walk through miles of car-free streets, offering a unique opportunity to explore the city like never before.
This Sunday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Viva CalleSJ will feature the fan-favorite “Parks to Roses” route that journeys through the Municipal Rose Garden, The Alameda, Japantown, and Roosevelt Park.
“Viva CalleSJ is one of the many ways we’re building a more connected and vibrant San José," said Mayor Matt Mahan. "By opening up our streets for everyone to enjoy, this event brings us closer, promotes wellness, and strengthens our community bonds. I invite all our residents to come out and experience your city in an unforgettable way.”
Viva CalleSJ is more than an opportunity to exercise; it’s a time to connect with family, friends, neighbors, and local businesses in the area. The day’s itinerary is packed with exciting performances, vendor booths, and activities ranging from BMX shows to pro wrestling matches.
While riding along the route, participants can stop at three main activity hubs for water refills, free bike repairs, first aid, restrooms, and more.
At Roosevelt Park, score goals with the San José Earthquakes, enjoy a performance from Grupo Folklorico Yolotli Gurrerense, and enjoy tunes from DJ Too Tall.
In Japantown, play slapshot with the San José Sharks while listening to sets from DJs like DJ Cutso, Cado, and Valley Wolf.
At the Municipal Rose Garden, groove to DJ John Jimenez while roaming through the vendor booths coordinated by Culture Night Market.
St. James Park will also serve as a mini hub featuring live performances, sports activities from Volo Sports, and even a rock-climbing wall.
Twenty-two local businesses along the route will serve as official "pit stops," each offering something special to those who stop by.
“As a local business, we love being part of Viva CalleSJ,” said Josh Weeks, co-owner of Torino Panino in Littlest Little Italy. “It’s amazing to see so many people out enjoying the day and exploring parts of the city they might not usually visit. This event truly brings the community together, and we look forward to it every year.”
Viva CalleSJ happens three times a year and is a central part of PRNS’ mission. Aligned with the ActivateSJ guiding principle of “Public Life,” Viva CalleSJ transforms public spaces into vibrant places for people to connect and create lasting memories.
