With the 2024 Olympics looming, skateboarding will again be on the world competitive stage and some people are asking, where does the commercialization and sportification of this once tightly-knit subculture end and has it totally lost it’s identity or does the subculture still live on a parallel universe? Who’s to benefit from this evolution and to whose detriment? This captivating and concise paper dives into the ever expanding tangled web skateboarding has found itself in through fierce capitalism, the pursuit of control and the ensuing power struggle.
