August 4 is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day and we’re celebrating Commons Cookies!

First served in the Carlin Commons, the cookies have been popular with generations of Wildcats. Though the Carlin Commons no longer stands, and we still have a few months before the New Learning Commons opens, the name "Commons Cookie" remains.
As you walk into school each morning you can smell them baking, and they are available all day in the Wildcat Cafe.

Today we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who died on
July 31, 1556.

This is the perfect day to start a weekly “Words of the Week: SI Edition” series taking a look at different words and phrases unique to our Jesuit tradition. (Upcoming posts will be on Tuesdays)

Young Iñigo was born in 1491 to a noble Basque family. As a young man he was influenced by romantic stories and the idea of chivalry. He eventually became a Spanish soldier. After he was wounded by a cannonball in Pamplona in 1521, he spent his long rehabilitation reading the illustrated life of Christ and a book about the lives of saints.

Once recovered, he intended to travel to the Holy Land, but stopped in Manresa where he had a profound spiritual experience.

Later, Iñigo attended various universities in Barcelona and other Spanish cities.

Because he spoke about his spiritual experiences, but was not a priest, he was interrogated by the Inquisition. When he finally left Spain to study at the University of Paris, he changed his name from the Basque Iñigo to the Latin Ignatius.

After studying in Paris, Ignatius and his friends, Francis Xavier and Peter Faber, formed an apostolic community which became known as the Society of Jesus. Ignatius became the first superior of the order.

We are halfway through summer break and St. Ignatius College Preparatory has already sent five groups of students on Immersion trips.

Our Immersion Program offers rising seniors the opportunity to learn from and encounter the complex realities of persons and communities experiencing marginalization. Based on educating students for a "faith that does justice," the Immersion Program invites students to deepen their understanding of faith and solidarity through shared prayer, reflection, and simple living.

Supported by local partner organizations, immersion participants will come to know other communities through their stories, traditions, struggles, celebrations, and expressions of faith.

Students at SI come from varying socioeconomic, ethnic and religious backgrounds. However, they share the same daily experiences of attending a Jesuit prep school located in one of the most dynamic regions in the United States. The Immersion Program at SI forms students in an awareness of their privilege that compels them to grow as persons with and for others.

On Immersion, students find themselves learning about and living with people in completely different circumstances than their own. When students apply to go on an Immersion trip, they do not get to pick the location of their trip. Their experience could take them to another country, another state, or a few miles away to the other side of San Francisco.
