Grade inflation is making it harder for college admissions offices to distinguish high-achieving students from each other.
Examples of grade inflation:
- A paper that might have earned a B in the past now receives an A. For example, some teachers do not deduct points for grammar errors or poor logical reasoning.
- Not turning in homework for an assignment used to earn the student 0%; many school now calculate that percentage at 50%.
- The average GPA at many colleges has risen from around 2.5 in the 1960s to over 3.5 today.
