BSU invited Head of School Dr. Quinton P. Walker to speak in recognition of Pride Month and Juneteenth. Quinton reflected on his personal journey, experiences with belonging and advocacy, and the ways his identity as a q***r, black, multiracial, southern man has evolved throughout his life. His remarks encouraged students to consider the importance of community, self-discovery, and standing up for equity and inclusion.
During lunch, students also participated in a seed-planting activity in honor of Juneteenth. The activity served as a reflection on growth, resilience, and the ongoing work of cultivating a more just and inclusive future. π±

π» Monday: The Chamber Orchestra kicked things off with a program of small ensemble works, including student-arranged performances.
π€ Tuesday: Urban Singers took the stage with a mix of classic and contemporary pop and Broadway favorites.
π· Wednesday & Thursday: The Jazz Combos got groovy, with swing, standards, and improvisation.

Students on a BackCountry Blues trip to the South Fork American River made π³π’π±πͺπ₯ progress in their rafting skills π£ππ
They paddled a 12-mile stretch of the Lower Gorge, starting out in Class II rapids before going with the flow into Class III territory πͺπ β thatβs some serious momentum!
Cheers to these splash-worthy memories π¦ and making sure Cal Studies Seniors donβt get to have ALL the funβ¦ π£ββοΈβ‘π

While 74% of students participate in a sport, our annual Athletics Celebration is also a chance to honor our departing Seniors along with season wins. π
This year, our scholar-athlete-writer-artist-scientist-lego-maniac-all-around-allstars led us to division championships across boys and girls varsity sports.
Student speeches (so many speeches, and so many laughs, too β more than we can showcase here, so check out our Flickr for more!) highlighted what makes athletics at Urban special: the team spirit, and the memories on and off the field (pitch, court, piste, pool).
Cheers to the Blues, all the amazing coaches, and to our inspiring Athletics directors Joe and Kali! Thanks for a GREAT year. π

π And they're off! β The rain can't stop the JOY of the iconic Cal Studies trip: two weeks of bussing and backpacking across California to explore hydrology (so maybe the rain was a good omen?), the issues of water management in so many different ecosystems, the competing demands of farmers, cities, indigenous communities, and, yes, Mother Nature, too. π° β°οΈ
Check back in for more pics from this landmark Urban class, as well as info on the always incredible presentations from the Seniors who've made the journey... and returned to tell the tale.

With the end of the school year in sight, what's good for clearing your mind during this busy time? How about a return to childlike wonder and abandon with communal finger painting (and carrot sticks... and popsicles)!
Our Peer Resource group β which offers student-led support and community for mental health β hosted a glorious Gardy (garden party) to remind everyone that a little mess can be good for the soul.
