What does it mean to design with intention, atmosphere, and a strong sense of place?
Two Academy of Art University students are being recognized by the prestigious Julia Morgan Awards for work that explores exactly that through interior architecture, fine art, and classical design principles.
From a hotel concept inspired by Oakland’s cultural identity to a series of paintings capturing the quiet presence of artisanal spaces in Sonoma, Shweta Shiravadekar and Mark McDowell are creating work rooted in storytelling, craftsmanship, and experience.

For the second year in a row, Academy of Art University B.Lab students have earned the AIASF Leadership Award — this time for community-centered design proposals reimagining Oakland’s historic 16th Street Train Station.
Their projects honor the station’s legacy while exploring bold new futures rooted in preservation, care, culture, and connection.

Meet Lucas Cruz, one of 10 Academy of Art University Fashion students competing in the With Love Halston design challenge for the upcoming Bloom Fashion Show Presented by Levi Strauss & Co.!
“My inspiration came from flowers,” says Cruz. “I wanted to emulate the behavior of flowers in the wind.”
Over the past six months, 10 Academy of Art University students have undergone a rigorous design challenge, dedicated to sustaining the memory and legacy of the legendary fashion designer Halston. Witness the live selection of the official winner of the 2026 Bloom Design by a panel of guest judges, and get excited for an afternoon of fashion, caviar & champagne, and luxurious entertainment.
