Issues of concern in children’s lives and society at large serve as the inspiration and platform for personal and moving music theatre projects.

Street Sounds Urban Opera Productions believes storytelling can be a dramatic event for performers and participants and has the potential to generate meaningful self-expression, emotional and intellectual development and interpersonal connections. It also allows participants to explore a variety of creative arts. As a storyteller, we strive to create a world unique to the story, complete with musi

c, colors, shapes and mood. It is important for us to remain sensitive to the cultural origin of the story or the version of the story we choose to use. That is manifested through the choices of musical genre, musical composition, visual elements and performance style. Through the varied Street Sounds Urban Opera program offerings k-12th grade students use their interpretative skillset and their own imaginative melodies and voices to bring literary works to life. Youth create original narratives to dramatize current and/or historical events or themes and add the power of music in a culminating performance for peers, teachers, parents and community. Program Components
• Urban Opera I (4 Aria Maximum Story Adaptation) (5th-12th Grade)
o 30 – 1 Hour Visits – 1 – 1 Hour Community Presentation

• Urban Opera II (3 Aria Maximum Story Adaptation & Original Composition)
o 20 – 1 Hour Visits – 1 – Hour Community Presentation

• Songwriting & Stage Performance (Single Song Original Composition)
o 15 – 1 Hour Visits

• Songwriting & Music Video (Single Song Original Composition)
o 15 – 1 Hour Visits

Our program guides our participants from imaginative creation to somatic performance, while offering basic knowledge and exposure needed in composing in the fields of Opera, Musical Theatre and/or Contemporary Music through a six-step process of:

1. Text Adaptation and Libretti Writing
2. Aria and Chorale Melodic Composition
3. Staging & Physical Movement Choreography
4. Set, Props and Costume Design
5. Full Staging Rehearsal
6. Community Presentation
Or Video Filming & Production

Under the facilitation of a teaching artist, participants use their interpretive understanding of a pre-written text to adapt a story, write the libretto, compose the score, design the sets, props and staging, rehearse and ultimately perform an original piece of musical theatre for their community.
