FNP Spotlight! We’re rounding out LatinX Heritage month by proudly spotlighting 2nd year FNP student, Kimberly Iniguez!

I am the eldest daughter of Mexican immigrants, the first in my family to graduate school/college, and now be working on my Masters. I am so proud of being a first-generation student. It has allowed me to become incredibly resilient and resourceful and understand that simply because one door closes does not mean there is not another way in. For my Latinx peers, please do not give up and always remember why you started this path--our community needs us! ❤️ We must continue being role models for other aspiring Latinx healthcare providers and always lend a helping hand when needed.

Area of Interest: Underserved communities and recent arrival/newcomer health

What inspires you in this field?
What initially brought my interest to the profession were the patients who identified with me through speaking the same language and a profound love for pan dulce. To this day, the resilient and resourceful patients I meet in clinicals continue to motivate me to complete the program and become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have also been fortunate in the community I surround myself with and the amazing guidance I have received from preceptors, as they continue to inspire me as well.

Clinical pearl you'd like to share?
Be gentle with yourself, and always remember we are doing our best.

What is one thing you would tell your childhood self?
You are exactly where you need to be. Continue to find your voice because what you heard growing up is not true-- calladita no se ve más bonita.

Anything interesting you've done recently?
I had much fun this summer relaxing, taking trips, and spending time with family. At the beginning of summer, I volunteered with other peers at the DYF camp for kiddos with T1DM and had an incredible time. Towards the end of summer, I was lucky enough to celebrate my dad obtaining his citizenship. #ucsfgpsa #ucsfson #ucsffg2c #ucsf #ucsfnursing #ucsffirstgen @ucsfassn @ucsfassn @ucsffnp @np_california @goldengatenahn @goldengatenahn @itskiiimyyyyyyy 10/24/2023

FNP Student Spotlight! We continue in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month to proudly spotlight 1st year FNP student, Yari Suarez!

I am a first-generation student, and I am very grateful to be at UCSF. My parents are immigrants from Mexico, and my hometown is Livermore.
My area of interest: primary care, underserved communities, and my specialty is FNP.

What inspires me: I know that there is a need for more bilingual providers. I hope to provide my patients with quality healthcare and help fill that need. Also, I am aware that representation matters. Sometimes, it's hard for kids to believe they can achieve things when they don't see people who look and speak like them achieving those goals. Hopefully, in the future, I will be able to inspire other students to pursue careers in healthcare.

Clinical Pearl: As students, our voices have power when advocating for our patients.

One thing I would tell my childhood self: Perseverance is my superpower.

Over the summer: I had my MEPN pinning ceremony. It was a special moment for me because it took me four years to get to UCSF, and I could share this moment with my grandparents, who came from Mexico for the ceremony. My grandfather was a migrant farmworker; that was how he provided for his 10 children who lived in Mexico. Sharing this moment with him was nice because his sacrifices have also led me to be here.

FNP Student Spotlight! In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we proudly honor and spotlight 2nd year FNP student, Abel Rivas!

I am Abel, I am Salvadoran, and I thrive in tropical weather. I am in the last year of my FNP training, and this past year I have also enjoyed courses in the public health and health policy track. On my spare time I enjoy hikes and food in El Salvador, reading poetry books, and spending time with people.

In 2021, I took a leave of absence. I had failed my RN board exam, twice. I remember well the anguish, anxiety, depression, and self-degradation. When I returned to El Salvador and LA, I only became more sensitized to the ways I am materially shielded and protected by systems that privilege conformity and success. There are people saying no to these systems, both in my life, and here. I realize too that I am fortunate and privileged to have been insulated by family, friends, and special people at UCSF. I am here thanks to them. So, a study plan or even words of encouragement will not ever suffice. But I write this to say that you’re not alone. Detach if you must and return when you can. I hope that you re/take your exam, re/apply to graduate school, and/or know that you’re putting up the good fight. Keep going-- don’t do the work for the institution.

Area of Interest:
I am in the FNP specialty, and I am interested in student health and street medicine.

What inspires you in this field?
The unending love and commitment that I’ve seen from my preceptors and faculty this year. There are also Latinx/e NPs that have role modeled so much for me at UCSF. Grx Denisse, Carlos B., y Jayme.

Clinical pearl:
If there’s room for fear and ‘failure’, then what is ahead must be greater and generative.

What is one thing you would tell your childhood self?
It’s okay to take your time.

Anything interesting you've done recently?

FNP Spotlight! In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to honor and spotlight 2nd year FNP student, Brenda Chicas!

Here are some words from Brenda:
I am a first gen NP student. I'm the first in my immediate and extended family to go to college and feel very blessed to be here. I am a proud Salvadoreña born and raised in LA, my family is from El Salvador 🇸🇻
For the Latinx community, we have so much to give and this is our opportunity to advocate and care for our communities that don't always get the care they need. Always keep going and remember what led you to this career, we have the power to help so many people!

Area of interest: FNP student, interest in primary care within underserved communities

What inspires me in this field: I've been lucky to rotate with some pretty awesome preceptors and work within the Latinx community. Seeing how caring and thorough they are with patients makes me happy and it keeps me pushing to be the best provider I can be.

Clinical pearl: Even if it seems scary and that you'll fail, just say yes and go for it (safely, of course) and you'll be happy you have one more feat under your belt!

One thing id tell my childhood self: Its okay to fail and not know the answers to everything, stay present and enjoy everyday as it comes.

Over the summer I got to camp at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon and it was nice to get out and be off the grid for a few days. We camped right in front of the lake and it was beautiful and so relaxing!

FNP Student Spotlight: Meet Carly Hwang, 2nd year FNP student.

Area of Interest: Primary care

What inspires you in this field: Creating long-standing/collaborative relationships with patients and their families.

Clinical pearl you'd like to share: Even the very best clinical interventions are not helpful is there is no buy-in from the patient. Partner with your patients to figure out how interventions can best be incorporated into their lives. The time put in upfront, can save time and improve health outcomes down the line.

What is one thing you would tell your childhood self? One of the greatest strengths is being able to bounce back from mistakes and failures. Practice exercising these skills sooner rather than later.

Anything interesting you've done over the summer/recently? Over the summer I volunteered with many other nursing, medical and pharmacy students at the DYF camp for kids diagnosed with T1DM. In between sessions, I got to camp, hike, and climb with fellow FNP friends near Kings Canyon National Park.

Meet our very own, Carly Hwang, 2nd year FNP student!

Area of interest: primary care - type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Inspirations: The community and generosity in this field - when there are gaps in care and/or medicine because of the way the U.S. healthcare system functions, patients with diabetes help each other by providing anything and everything - advice, extra supplies, medication, food. It is lovely to witness the compassion and resilience in the community and it inspires me to be an advocate to my future patients.

Clinical pearl: What doesn't kill you mutates and tries again

What would you tell your childhood self: I would tell my childhood self that trying and failing is way better than not trying at all (even if there is a 1 mile run requirement for the field hockey team ha!)

Recent fun? I recently visited the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee - an interesting historical music venue that still hosts a radio variety show - it was fun to watch up and coming talented country musicians and try to win a 3 months' supply of ham!
