Balboa High School, at 1000 Cayuga Avenue, is no. 205. Founded in 1928, it's one of only four schools in the city with landmark status (the others are Mission High School, Roosevelt Middle School, and the Sunshine School). Balboa High is an example of the Spanish Colonial Revival style, and was built with a prominent center courtyard, mission style roof tiles, and arcades. Although the distinctive red mission tile roof was replaced in 1998 with seismically stable materials, an original roof tile is displayed in Balboa's Hall of History museum. Built during a boom in the city’s school construction in the 20’s and 30’s (as the population shifted to the southern and western pockets of the city), the school’s buildings were part of an advancement in school design in California, which considered the special topography and climate of the surrounding area and emphasized the connection of indoor and outdoor learning. Tens of thousands of students have graduated from Balboa in the decades since the school opened in 1928, and notable alumni include Calvin Simmons, the first African American conductor of a major U.S. orchestra, and Grateful Dead lead guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia.
