Did you tell any stories this weekend?
At my Book Passage and Vivalon improv storytelling workshops, people trusted their instincts, followed some wonderfully questionable ideas, and discovered—as they always do—that the funniest and most meaningful moments are usually the ones nobody could have planned.
Then, at Simply Said: “Innocence,” people did almost the opposite. Every story was true. Lived. Remembered. Carefully chosen.
And somehow, they still carried that same spark of surprise.
Our special guests, Keith Lowell Jensen and Amy Bee, both left the audience slack-jawed—for extremely different reasons. “2 Live Crew” was involved in one story. Crushing a reanimated frog was involved in the other.
Innocence is a broad theme.
But how nice to sit in a room full of people—laughing, leaning in, and recognizing a little of ourselves in someone else’s story. Even if that story involved a frog whose week was considerably worse than ours.
Then came a birthday party that ended with all of us getting hot dogs and corn dogs Sharpie-tattooed on our arms. As one does.
So: improv, true stories, questionable amphibian decisions, temporary processed-meat tattoos, and some genuinely lovely human connection.
A pretty great weekend.
As always, I’m grateful to everyone who came, performed, listened, took a chance, and made these gatherings what they were.
I get to witness this every week, and I’m still amazed by what can happen when one person simply says:
“This happened to me…”
