Recently, a fellow firefighter asked me if I had any advice to pass on to other firefighters as I hung my helmet and coat for the last time. As I think about that question six months later, I do have one very valuable piece of advice:
take pictures. Take lots of pictures. Not of the gorey things, but, of those you work with. Whether it's your crew, a crew you work with on OT or a trade, or just someone whose friendship and comraderie you value, take pictures.
Those days will soon turn into weeks, weeks, into months, months into years, years into decades, then the career is over.
Some of these colleagues and friends will beat you to the ultimate "finish line", and, unless you have these pictures, your children and grandchildren will never know what any of these great men and women look like. And it is possible you will forget, too.
Fraternally yours,
Brother Brian A. Bruce
