Live Oak School is a private, progressive, co-educational day school for K-8 students.

To know a child well is Live Oak's vision, and the responsibility of the entire Live Oak community— faculty, parents, and the students themselves.

It was great to welcome back so many members of the Class of 2022 and their families at the reunion a couple weeks ago!

We wish them the best as they get ready to head off to college in the fall and we hope to see them back on Mariposa soon!

✏️ Third graders finished the year by showcasing their writing at their annual Author Share in the Grand Hall. Parents, guardians, staff, and classmates roamed the Grand Hall exploring the non-fiction and fiction pieces crafted by our budding writers, while learning more about each author and leaving some encouraging words of feedback celebrating their work. ✨

Our eighth graders returned home from a very transformative trip through the American South. Their Civil Rights tour brought them from Atlanta to Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery. They got to experience many of the sites that played home to key parts of the Civil Rights Movement.

This was the second year that Live Oak's eighth graders participated in this trip. It immersed our students in real, meaningful history. Many of our students shared that they have never been to the South and came back with a new perspective of how the region's history has left both lasting scars and reasons to celebrate progress.

Altogether, the trip was equal parts insightful and moving, while bringing our students and faculty together for some valuable connection as their time at Live Oak winds to a close.

💡 The Curriculum Highlights series shines a light on the important and dynamic skill building that is happening in Live Oak classrooms every day. These highlights are prepared by Live Oak faculty and offer a glimpse into a notable activity, project, or unit that prepares students for interdisciplinary learning and agency beyond the classroom. ⬇

📣 This week we highlight the annual end-of-year tradition of fifth graders building their communication skills and finding their voice in crafting their personal speeches.

Cheers to our creative students for their wonderful work and our talented art faculty for helping our artists fully express themselves through their pieces! Last night's Art Show brought our community together to celebrate all that and more.

It was great to see how much pride our students take in showing off their work, how much insight they offer in talking about their creative process, and how much joy they feel seeing their work out on display.

If you missed the show it's not too late–the work will remain up through the remainder of the school year. Stop in after school sometime and take a casual walk through the world of Live Oak art!

What's the best way for a first grader to build their understanding of nonfiction writing? Team up with a fourth grader, of course!

First graders welcomed their fourth grade guests into their classroom to share their animal research, while fourth graders shared their own animal reports.

They extended that partnership to working together on poetry writing the following week.

It's a great way to collaborate and engage in learning at many different levels!
