What makes up one's identity?

One of the ways fifth graders learned about building community early in the school year involved them examining the range of traits and characteristics that shape who we are.

They took turns giving short presentations outlining various aspects of individuals' identities and working with partners to match and discuss examples of various identity traits.

Similar to other grade levels, our "fifthies" are engaging in community building activities that help them understand the diversity of their classmates' identities and perspectives that will help them build a strong classroom community for the year ahead.

πŸ’₯ Our new faculty have hit the ground running! We have enjoyed welcoming them into the Live Oak community, hearing their insights and learning from their perspectives already.

They have spent the last couple weeks getting acclimated and we know our students will be engaged in their learning from day one thanks to the expertise that each of these educators brings.

Wishing a warm welcome to our newest team members! We are happy to have you at Live Oak!

Looking forward to seeing everyone for the first day of school on Wednesday! πŸŽ‰

Nothing better than seeing Live Oak alums translating their skills, passions, and experiences into activities that lead to a positive impact in their communities. ⬇️

🏈 Coleton Namie started a free youth flag football program called Path to Play that helps remove barriers for kids to learn team sports.

🌟 Because of his commitment to building up his community, Coleton was one of our four honorees for the Young Alumni Changemaker Award this past year. It’s inspiring to hear our changemakers share how Live Oak has helped them become leaders beyond Mariposa.

πŸ“šHere’s to a great school year for Coleton and all of our alums pursuing their education and impactful work around the world!

We are happy to showcase another one of our recent graduates who took the lead on a Student Leadership Project this past school year. ⬇

🌏 Hope T. '26 organized an outstanding Earth Day Celebration for the entire school at Jackson Park in April. Learn a little bit more about Hope and her project!

We appreciate the work that Hope and the rest of the middle school leaders put in over the course of the last year to lead a dozen different sustainability-themed projects on behalf of the school. We are excited to see how your collective changemaking spirit grows in high school and beyond!

Summer is the time for learning!πŸ’‘πŸ“ˆ

A group of Live Oak teachers attended the Project Zero Classroom Institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The professional development focused on creating classrooms that make student thinking visible through carefully designed thinking routines, meaningful inquiry, and rich classroom discussions. The experience emphasized how teachers can foster curiosity, deepen understanding, and help students become more reflective, independent thinkers.

πŸ’¬ Fourth grade teacher Halen Groce reflected on his time at the conference: "One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of slowing down learning so students have time to think deeply, share their ideas, and build on one another’s thinking.

πŸ”€ "Another was the power of making thinking visible through simple routines that encourage students to explain their reasoning, ask thoughtful questions, and make connections across subjects. These ideas align closely with the kind of student-centered learning we value at Live Oak, and I’m excited to incorporate more visible thinking routines into my classroom this year to deepen student engagement and understanding.

🌟 "Beyond the learning itself, it was inspiring to collaborate with educators from around the world who shared a commitment to thoughtful, inquiry-based teaching. The experience reaffirmed that some of the most meaningful learning happens when students are encouraged to be curious, take intellectual risks, and see themselves as capable thinkers."
