Imagine having a critically acclaimed graphic novelist as your personal mentor. In our low-residency MFA program, masters of the art form will work with you to perfect your writing and drawing skills, while you study everything from comics theory to publication design. You’ll also learn from renowned artists in other disciplines, including graphic design, printmaking, and animation.

Tonight and tomorrow! We’re so happy to close out the 2026 edition of Comics in the City with our MFA Comics class of 2026 performing readings of their brilliant thesis work! Come to campus at 6:30pm to watch the culmination of many hours of hard work, joy and tears. Afterwards, tonight, walk with us to the Novack Gallery for a reception and the last chance to see the Emanata gallery of the MFA Comics 2027 cohort. We look forward to seeing you!!

Last night, CCA’s MFA Comics program welcomed graphic novelist Mary Shyne to campus as our latest Comics in the City visiting artist! Mary shared a reading from her debut graphic novel You And Me On Repeat, and answered questions about time loops, book pitching, and drawing a perfect Snoopy. Thanks for joining us, Mary! 💜

Shyne is a local published comics artist and publishing professional who also works on Snoopy for Charles Schulz Studio! CCA Comics Chair Mel Gillman will interview Shyne for deets on her career, YA Publishing, her 2025 book You And Me On Repeat, and more!!

After Comics in the City in the Timken Auditorium, join us for a signing in the Novack Gallery alongside the second viewing of our CCA Comics MFA ‘27 students’ Emanata show!

What a night!! Tonight, we were thrilled to welcome Frederick Noland to the stage as our second Comics in the City visiting artist, to be interviewed by Justin Hall about his forthcoming graphic novel MAJOR TAYLOR. Afterward, our 13 second-summer MFA Comics students threw a grand opening reception for their thesis gallery show, EMANATA! Missed the opening tonight? Don’t worry, the show will be open to the public again the next two Friday nights in July, after our each of our remaining Comics in the City events!

This Friday, join us on campus for the grand opening of EMANATA, our big annual exhibition of comics and art from our second-summer MFA Comics students! 13 grad students have installed their incredible comics work in CCA’s Novack Gallery, and many will also have print copies of their work available for sale. MFA Comics alum Kayan 嘉欣畫漫畫 has completed a gorgeously vivid mural, “This Asian American Life,” up on Hyde Street, near the SF Asian Art Museum / SF Public Library! In comic-like panels, the viewer journeys through scenes of SF Chinatown through childlike eyes and memory. In an interview with Mission Local, Kayan encourages the recognition of the joy and freedom in quiet, mundane moments. Congratulations on another installation of a beautiful series around town, Kayan 嘉欣畫漫畫!
