Rep. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-FL) introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives the Glaucoma Vision Act of 2026. This legislation would require coverage of annual glaucoma screenings for people at increased risk of glaucoma. It applies to four major health coverage programs (private Insurance, Medicare Part B, Medicaid, and Federal Employees Health Benefits) and eliminates applicable cost sharing for such screenings. It also includes a competitive grant program to provide free or low-cost glaucoma screenings and follow-up care for uninsured and underinsured individuals.

It authorizes $10 million in competitive National Eye Institute research grants to find better ways to detect and manage glaucoma. The Academy appreciates Rep. Wilson’s leadership in introducing this important legislation.

Joining us in our support of this legislation are the American Glaucoma Society, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), ARVO, Alliance for Vision Research, Cornea Society, and the Macula Society.

A healthy 35-year-old man presented with blurred vision in the left eye 5 hours after landing from air travel. A, Two aberrant macular vessels, a tributary of the superior retinal vein and a branch of the inferior retinal artery, were seen. B, OCT demonstrated intraretinal and subretinal fluid in the superior fovea. C, OCT angiography identified arteriovenous communication between the aberrant vessels. D, Fluorescein angiography, performed 24 hours after symptom onset, confirmed the arteriovenous communication with early filling of the branches of that arteriole and absence of active leakage. The symptoms resolved spontaneously within 3 days. Transient rise in hydrostatic pressure at high altitude within the arteriovenous communication was likely the cause of the leakage.
