Just wrapped up a week of quarterly 💳training at Elavon HQ in Knoxville, TN covering HIPAA-compliant payment processing, PCI compliance, legal surcharging, patient security, and ways we can continue improving support/technology for our fellow doctors and practice owners.

If you’re one of our 1,100+ ODoF Merchant practices, you’ve probably worked with Allana and Ann for onboarding, tech support, account questions, or those lovely PCI annual reminder texts (we want you to avoid those fees!) 😂

👉 Fun fact: both previously worked as GMs/opticians in optometry practices, so they actually understand how a busy practice runs!

A big thank you to Elavon Leadership for continuing to support our lowest-cost doctor merchant program, available exclusively to ODoF members, and for helping us keep building a better payment solution for independent practices.

08/27/2026

If you’re attending Academy Anaheim 9/30-10/2 be sure to stop by and say hi to the entire ODoF team! 👋

Bring your financial, career, and practice questions. You can even ask us whether SpaceX is still an A+ investment….Haha.

LMK which 👇 ODoF SWAG you want to reserve!

• 🆓 iPad/Phone Holder: For all your viewing pleasure when you’re bored at work but still need to work an extra day to pay off student loans.

• 🆓 Limited Edition ODoF T-Shirt: Show off your financial fitness and teach random people about the Backdoor Roth IRA.

• 🆓 The Optometry Student’s Guide to Financial Freedom + Career Books (Limited supply): If your class lead hasn’t given you a copy yet, stop by to grab a signed one!

✨ Inspirational post! ✨ This is my 401(k) balance over the last 9+yrs, during which I contributed the maximum amount annually, up to $24,500 as of 2026! Dat Bui

👨🏻‍⚕️ I graduated in 2015 as a BROKE ASS doctor HAHA with a 📉 NEGATIVE net worth of about -$225,000, thanks largely to nearly a quarter-million dollars in student loans.

My first job offered NO retirement plan, so I left after a few months.

The next job offered a SIMPLE IRA ($17K Limit in 2026), which was better than nothing, but had a much lower contribution limit and also complicated my ability to do a Backdoor Roth IRA (Tax-free growth of $7.5K).

Finally, I landed a FT position with a 401(k) Match and have consistently maxed it out while also paying off my student loans, saving for a home, investing, and trying to live below my means.

Today (9-year Period)

• 💰 401(k) Balance: $562,220

• 📈 3-Year Annualized Return: +22.17%

• 💵 Contributions (what I put in): ~$208,500

• 📈 Gains: ~$353,720 (via compounding interest)

• 🏖️ Projected Monthly Retirement Income starting in 2052: $18,891

📊 I primarily invested in a simple, low-cost S&P 500 index fund, which returned over +12.4% annually over 9 years, with the last 3 years surpassing +22.17%. Nothing fancy. Just consistency, time, and letting compounding do the heavy lifting.

I’m NOT sharing this to BRAG, but to highlight the power of compounding and why every new grad, owner or high-earning doctor should consider a low-cost 401k plan like Human Interest.

It’s one of the easiest ways to maximize tax deductions, get tax credits, reduce staff turnover, invest in your team’s financial future, and retire a multimillionaire.

You don’t need to start with a huge amount. Start with what you can, increase it as your income grows, and give compounding as much time as possible. 🙌 Cheers to Financial Freedom!

👇 LMK if you want to start a Human Interest 401(k) + Profit Sharing Plan. Through ODs on Finance, you can get 12 months FREE + 0.12% AUM, significantly lower than Guideline.

💰FYI Practice owners — Need working capital?

We’ve been getting more requests for capital that isn’t tied to a specific equipment purchase, remodel, or expansion.

Most banks are hesitant to approve these loans in today’s high interest lending environment, but Linda Childress at Huntington Bank may be able to help through our ODoF doctor lending program.

• ✅ Loans typically start at $50,000 MIN

• ✅ Simple application process for loans under $499,000

• ✅ Around 5.50%–5.75%, depending on the scenario

• ✅ Often far better than online lenders (10-15%)or business credit cards

A few things to know:

⚠️ $100,000 or less: Huntington will seek the best available lien position on the practice
⚠️ Over $100,000: Huntington generally needs a first-position lien, which may require refinancing existing debt
⚠️ $250,000 or more: Huntington must be added to the practice’s insurance policy
⚠️ Newer Cold Start: Usually won't qualify unless they are 2 years and show profitability

Working-capital loans can be more difficult to approve, but this is one of the better options available to practice owners.

💳 Credit Card Surcharge? Agree or disagree? 🤔

Just saw this article in INVISION saying 15% of Optometrists practices are doing a ZERO Credit Fee Surcharge program.

Why should your practice be responsible for funding your patients’ credit card points?
