Dear Neighbor,
As Muslims we are observing the month of Ramadan. It's a month of fasting and sharing goodness. We made treats for you. We hope you enjoy.

Read "Hamza's First Fast" to my son's second grade class. Story and cookie can make a great session of getting to know each other.

Letter to teachers:
Let's share a date!
Saturday (May 27 2017) was the beginning of Ramadan, a holy month from Muslims around the world. A month where Muslims fast from pre-dawn to sunset. Everyday for a whole month. Of course there are exceptions like children, pregnant ,nursing mothers elderly and the sick. There are 1.8 billion Muslims around the world. What makes this month so special from the rest? Muslims believe The Holy Quran was revealed in this month and the first word that revealed was “Read”. From Japan to China from Timbuktu to Venezuela there are Muslims in every part of the world. The color of Muslims is just like the rainbow of humans every color is represented in Muslims.
Back to our date. With such vast differences in cultures around the world there's one thing all Muslims share and that is and that is the modest little date sugary and sweet and such a treat. Dates have amazing qualities to them too many to list here, full of nutrients and vitamins and nourishing properties just Google benefits of dates. There's something special about the dates I present to you. These dates are local grown in California, planted our soil, nurtured by farmers of this land. The sweetness that replenishes a fasting body is just like our community here at DECS that nurtures our children.
The Indian in me had to make a fried treat, Presenting Pakora! Potato coated in a gram flour with spices.
Here's to sweetness
Will you have a date with me?

I remember every Ramadan waiting is utter anticipation for pictures from around the world during Ramadan time. This year these pictures have left me in tears seeing so many Muslims suffering in so many different countries yet steadfast in being Muslims. I pray for relief around the world for Muslims and all.
