PIXELS are square (screens) PPI
Dots are round (devices, hardware) DPI
SPOTS (which can be oval or diamond) are often round SPI — more commonly referred to as DPI
LINES are a pattern made up of device spots to reproduce images on printing presses, and other output devices (commonly 110, 133, or 150) LPI
Swapping out images that are low resolution for position only placeholders using a server is Open Prepress Interface OPI
