Singer-songwriter, and Urban Alum, Stephen Dawes ('16) is touring his debut album "Skin to Skin" — and he’ll be playing the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco next Wednesday!🎸

While this all-ages show is on a school night (😪), we love when our grads take the stage when they swing through town.

Students take music, visual arts, or theater every year they attend Urban. It's not a requirement in the traditional sense. We see it as an opportunity to develop our creative voices and find new ways of looking at and sharing our experience of the world. 👉👈

🏆A good muck-rake needs to look good, too: congrats to recent alum Daphne Yeh Gilman (’26) on her National Scholastic Press Association design award for her spread “A Look Inside the Urban Legend Newsroom.”

Eye-catching AND eye-opening? That’s the Urban Legend way! 👀🗞️

TBT to MultiCulti Leadership Orientation this summer! This group spent critical time team-building, talking to school leaders, past trustees, and each other to determine a theme for Urban’s work on belonging and inclusion this year (and for the future) — 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦.

Dignity: something we all have and all need. Practice: what everything worth doing requires — and a reminder that sometimes we all make mistakes while getting better.

MultiCulti Leadership works with Urban’s Dean of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging and our Service Learning department chair to help guide student affinity spaces while also coordinating a range of events and forums during the school year.

Sometimes you gotta stretch your legs to stretch your mind.
Backcountry Blues — our outdoor education program — kicked off Labor Day weekend with some time in the wild. 🌲

The mixed-grade group spent the night camping at Samuel P. Taylor State Park in Marin, then headed to Tomales Bay the next morning for a few hours of kayaking with Blue Waters Kayaking . They wrapped up with a stop in Point Reyes Station for ice cream (most necessary) before heading back. 🛶🍦

🧬🔬 Biotechnology is a new course this year (we like to keep it FRESH)!

Students get hands-on in the lab, building real-world biotech skills through DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, microbial culture, and inquiry-based experiments — while asking how the technology part of the equation can better serve people, communities, and the natural world.🌱

This week, students practiced their micropipetting skills with a challenge: “Make a 🇺!”

When Urban teachers lead a class like “California History,” they’re not just spewing facts to memorize for a test — they’re inviting students to investigate how that history was made: by whom, for whom, and how. That’s what we mean when we say we teach students 𝘩𝘰𝘸 to think, not 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 to think. 🤔

A recent field trip to the Oakland Museum of California had a class examining the storytelling on display to prepare for making museum exhibits of their own. 🔍

That’s the magic of letting our faculty design their own classes —ones you won’t see anywhere else — imagination, engagement, immersion (and parents wishing their high schools worked like this!). ✨

Hey, Urban! Today’s the perfect day to call your grandparents or special friends and wish them a very Happy Grandparents Day!
And while you’re at it… save the date! 📌

We’ll hear from Head of School, Dr. Quinton P. Walker, enjoy a festive lunch together, and celebrate what makes Urban 𝘜𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘯.
More details coming soon!

🦐 Shrimp rolls for lunch! Chef David doesn’t often take requests — but he does accept challenges! Urban students pushed for a special sandwich and our talented cafe overlords delivered.

While lots of kids bring lunch every day, and plenty step out to Haight for a treat, we’ve got plenty of delicious options on campus, too. 😋

Today especially. 🙏

What’s the point of doing Environmental Science if you don’t, like, get into the environment? 🌎

🏖️ Just in time for the beach party weather, students made their way to Lobos Creek at Baker Beach to measure hydro flows and chemical contents of this li’l waterway (which actually provides the majority of the Presidio’s potable H2O). 🚰

They also got a chance to scope out the treatment plant — flocculant!
