Urban Core Value #3: We honor the uniqueness of each individual and embrace diverse backgrounds, values and points of view to build a strong, inclusive community and to prepare students for lives in a multicultural society.

Our student-led affinity and ally groups presented their work at an All School Meeting this week and invited their peers to get involved — Urban putting its values into action by showing there’s LOTS of ways to belong. 🌟 📣 💙

🏀 Blues, come back to Page Street! 💙

𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬, 𝟯:𝟬𝟬-𝟳:𝟬𝟬𝗽𝗺

Join us for an afternoon of alumni fun: shoot some hoops at the Alumni Basketball Challenge & Open Gym (3:00–5:00 pm), wander your old stomping grounds on a self-led campus tour (4:00–5:00 pm), then gather in the backyard for the All-Alumni Garden Party (5:00–7:00 pm) with live music, food, drinks, yearbooks and plenty of catching up.

🎉 Classes ending in 1 and 6: this one’s especially for you!

Orientation traditionally ends with a ferry ride to Angel Island, where our newest Blues get a chance to hike, play on the beach, and chill out with spectacular views — appropriately beshrouded in fog (a summer tradition on its own). 🌁

Last Friday was no exception for the class of 2030, who look like they’ve already figured out the “joyful” part of Urban’s mission. 🙌 😁

First Day of School on 1563 Page Street! 📖

Probably some jitters, no matter if it’s Day 1 or Day 1095 (or Day 13,505 — yes there’s some faculty who’ve been exploring with, empowering, and engaging generations of Urban students).

✨ Which is part of the Urban magic: a place where everybody’s asking questions (exploring!) in a tight-knit community (empowering!) with classes you won’t find anywhere else, designed by our amazing teachers (engaging!).

Spikeball, Jenga, laughs, ice cream 🍦 (and popsicles because, as you know, there are many shades of Blue💙). A great way to end day two of 9th grade Orientation. 🗺️

With some help from their Senior guides, the whole class had a chance to mix it up and let off some steam after a day of laptops, tours, and general school mechanics.

Urban is all about trusting students with the time and space to discover their passions (chocolate, mint, or vanilla), make mistakes (mint), and forge meaningful connections with their whole community.

Last Saturday was our annual Families of Color Welcome Gardy 🎉, which is short for “garden party” — when you’ve got a great backyard, you USE it!

Hosted by P-IDEAS (Parents for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity at School, our affinity space for grown folks), our student-led MultiCulti leadership, the lunchtime gathering celebrated new families and returning ones with words from parent organizers, Head of School Quinton, icebreakers, and yummy food from Chef David and his crew. 💙

While there are just a few days of vacation left, a gardy's always a great way to get into gear for the school year! ⚙️📚

🎨🖌️ Inspiration was everywhere this spring in Painting!

From the studio to the galleries of SFMOMA and the de Young, students explored how artists observe, experiment, and bring ideas to life. Along the way, visits to the de Young's Monet and Venice exhibition and SFMOMA helped spark new ways of seeing that found their way back into students' own creative work.

Medieval Times? NO! It's the pre-Summer UrbanX Labs catapult and ballista demos!💥

Intrepid students from Applied Physics: Motion/Machines brought their final projects to the Panhandle (showing us just what Urban for a Reason means) to showcase their innovative problem-solving skills. Assessed for accuracy and distance, the students flung their end-of-year jitters into orbit before turning their attention to a far more important application of physics: an epic water fight. 💦⚙️

Get a grip!

MultiCulti Affinity leadership participated in a team-building ropes course with Outward Bound California last week. Nothing like fresh air and a little fear of heights to bring people together.

Students practiced communication and modeled trust while encouraging one another to take on new challenges (sounds like Urban’s mission), strengthening teamwork — and biceps.
