Bay Area artist and educator invited a group of undergraduate and graduate students from School of Art to articulate their unique perspectives on ā€œhomeā€. Ā This accomplished group of artists from a wide range of cultures and gender identities used a variety of mediums and techniques to examine their search to find a sense of belonging and safety. Watercolor, ink, acrylic paint, colored pencil, gouache, cannabis ink and gold leaf were among the materials chosen by the artists to address this theme.
Living and working in the Bay Area, these students confront the challenges of pursuing their art in a region where the scarcity of affordable living and work spaces are scarce. As exhibition artist Ella Rose Avery writes ā€œWe have all struggled to stay in the place we are from and loveā€. In the increasingly intolerant atmosphere of contemporary society, art making provides artists of diverse backgrounds with tools for expressing their struggles to find places ofĀ  acceptance. ā€œI found comfort in the gray areaā€ exhibition artist Mud explains.
One of Libby Black’s goals for this exhibition was to create unity between the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at SF State. Together these amazing student artists create poignant and though-provoking representations of the power of art as a language through which diverse voices convey their journeys to find their place in the world.

There is an amazing review for the current show up in the , See You Space Cowboy on squarecylinder.com.

ā€œSpace Cowboy corrals strands of fashion, advertising, TV, movies, manga and anime, Asian folk mythology, Afro-Futurism, hip hop dance and music, graffiti, skateboarding, martial arts and even some drag. It’s as unruly and energetic as its youthful intended audience. It illustrates how Asian and Black youth speak to each other without asking permission from mainstream (i.e., white) authority.ā€
