Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was approved in 2012 and we now have new options for HIV prevention, both approved and on the horizon. With these tools and HIV treatment we could end the HIV epidemic but we are in a challenging time where this goal is severely threatened. Dr. Gandhi will discuss available and future HIV prevention options and what’s at stake for not investing in advancing our HIV prevention goals worldwide.

Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH, is a Professor of Medicine and Associate Chief in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is also the Director of the UCSF Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and the Medical Director of the HIV Clinic (“Ward 86”) at San Francisco General Hospital. She serves as the Associate Program Director of the ID fellowship at UCSF. Her research focuses on HIV treatment and prevention optimization, HIV and women, adherence measurement in HIV and TB, adherence interventions, and optimizing the use of long-acting antiretroviral therapy (ART).

UCSF welcomes all participants to our events. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this event because of a disability, please contact Pilar Deer at [email protected] as soon as possible.

Human-driven land use change (LUC) increases disease spillover and drives viral evolution. This research links LUC to the emergence and spread of Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV) and Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV). The phylogeographic analysis traces EBOV’s origins to 1960 in the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo and SUDV’s to 1958 in Sudan. Landscape fragmentation coincided with viral divergence, expansion and genetic mutations, suggesting host adaptation. The findings highlight LUC’s role in shaping virus evolution and increasing spillover risk.

UCSF welcomes everyone, including people with disabilities, to our events. To request reasonable accommodations for this event, please email [email protected] as soon as possible.

Acute lower respiratory illnesses (ALRI) are a leading cause of death in young children globally. We developed the ALRITE mobile app to assist frontline health workers in Uganda. Originally focused on ALRI, the app now covers other acute childhood illnesses in East Africa through a partnership with Global Strategies. This talk will explore the challenges and opportunities in developing, testing, and implementing mobile health technologies in resource-limited settings, with an emphasis on digital clinical decision support. We will also share insights into our collaborative efforts and the impact on pediatric healthcare delivery.

Laura Ellington, MD, MS, is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at the University of Washington, pediatric pulmonologist at Seattle Children’s hospital and associate director of the pulmonary fellowship program. Her research focuses on improving the diagnosis and management of pediatric respiratory illnesses in East Africa.

UCSF welcomes everyone, including people with disabilities, to our events. To request reasonable accommodations for this event, please contact Christine Su by emailing [email protected] as soon as possible.
