The American Academy of Pediatrics' new report on digital ecosystems makes one thing clear: today’s media is designed to capture attention and children are growing up in it.

For young kids, that matters. Their brains are still building skills like focus, self-regulation, and learning through real-world interaction.

Screens can help, but they don’t replace relationships.

Children build resilience through everyday moments: waiting, problem-solving and learning to work through small disappointments. If screens become the default, those opportunities shrink.

And it’s not just how much media kids use. It’s what kind they're watching. Fast, short-form content used alone doesn’t support development the way shared, educational content can.

This weekend, our family child care educators gathered in the park for a wellness morning, stretching, playing, and breathing together.
This is the parallel process at the heart of our work: when we care for our caregivers and educators, they can pour back into the children and families they serve every day.
A heartfelt thank you to Liana and Mayra from Project Commotion for guiding us through the gentle exercises, play and self-care techniques , your warmth set the tone for the whole morning. And thank you to the San Francisco Department of Early Childhood for making this gathering possible.

Are you a high school aged youth attending school or residing in San Francisco who is interested in public transit, local government, and city planning? Apply for the Youth Transportation Advisory Board! The Advisory Board gives young people the opportunity to engage directly with SFMTA staff and provide valuable input on transportation projects and initiatives that impact San Francisco communities. Through the program, youth participants can elevate their voice within local government, earn volunteer hours, and receive mentorship and support for those interested in careers in public service.
