Founded in 2001 by the Daughters of Charity and De La Salle Christian Brothers, De Marillac Academy provides students in San Francisco’s impoverished Tenderloin neighborhood with an education to escape the grip of poverty, achieve success, and become service-oriented leaders. e Marillac offers a tuition-free, high-quality, Catholic education to children from low-income and underserved households. De Marillac is a member of the Nativity Miguel Network of Schools, serving more than 4,000 inner-city students across the country. A De Marillac education emphasizes reading, written and oral communication, math, science, social studies, and religion. Students typically enter De Marillac below grade level, but the school bridges educational deficits with an intensive educational curriculum designed to prepare graduates to compete successfully in demanding high school environments. Additionally, De Marillac partners with Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory and Catholic Youth Organization to provide a mandatory summer school and summer camp program. The California Pacific Medical Center, the University of San Francisco and St. Mary's College of California also support De Marillac’s counseling and health and wellness programs. Students at De Marillac are selected for enrollment based on a variety of factors including financial need, neighborhood of residence, previous academic performance, and demonstration of personal motivation.
