Are you assessing the symptom—or the dysfunction behind it? 👀

As practitioners, it’s easy to focus on where the pain, weakness, or restriction shows up. But the body is constantly adapting to the information it receives.

Sometimes the key to better results isn't doing more treatment—it’s asking better questions and testing the system differently.

The more you understand these neurological patterns, the more you can recognize what may be driving the compensation.

6 things I wish more practitioners understood about assessing dysfunction. 👀

Pain isn't always where the dysfunction is. Weakness doesn't always mean the muscle itself is weak. And recurring symptoms may be a sign that something deeper hasn't been identified.

The nervous system is constantly responding to the information it receives—and that can change how the body moves, stabilizes, and compensates.

The better we understand these patterns, the better we can assess what’s actually driving the dysfunction.

Why does movement help some pain—but make other pain worse? 👀

Because not all pain is driven by the same underlying dysfunction.

For some patients, movement can restore function. For others, the nervous system may be responding to faulty sensory input, creating protective or compensatory patterns that make certain movements aggravating.

That’s why simply telling a patient to “move more” isn't always the answer.

The key is identifying what the nervous system is responding to.

The hidden dysfunction test you MUST know. 👀

The body can compensate so well that the real dysfunction stays hidden behind the movement pattern you're seeing.

This test helps reveal whether the nervous system is actually controlling the movement the way it should—or if another dysfunction is influencing the response.

For practitioners, learning to recognize these hidden patterns can completely change how you assess a patient.

Pain, weakness, and movement restrictions don't always tell the whole story.
