Skytown Preschool needs your help! Here is a message from Martha Melgoza, a current student in our program (Cohort 2017) and the Director of Skytown:

"As some of you who have followed my work this year know, the preschool I run was displaced 16 months ago due to our rent going up by 48%. Yup, 48%!

We had to leave our location of 52 years and are now in our 2nd temporary space. We have managed to survive due to the dedication of 15 families that have hung on during this time. They have raised over 100,000 by putting on festivals, silent auctions, garage sales, bake sales, etc. Pretty amazing. They are tapped out as a community and we are on our last stretch here.

We are leasing a piece of parking lot, have landed a modular classroom, are building up our yard, survived every permit process from the City of Richmond, and are getting ready to apply for our license from the state. We have come up against one too many unexpected bills. This last one we are beyond our means to make and we need it to repair our sewer lateral and start up in the fall. Fun stuff us early childhood educators do, I know.

Please consider giving to our GoFundMe campaign and please send it to anyone you think would be willing to donate to ECE: http://ow.ly/Vx7B50ufs3Z

Dr. Mary Streshly, graduate of our program in 2015 is featured in a recent Stanford University newsletter article on a research collaborative to support English Learners in local public school districts. Streshly is reported as saying, “In education we don’t always have the luxury of basing our decisions on deep program evaluation. It’s usually more anecdotal, as opposed to a structured study. Or we’re looking at research on what we’d consider a similar school somewhere else, like New York City.”
