Celebrating the end of summer together before school starts.
Friends of St. Mary’s School recently held a benefit concert for the school, a Chinatown institution since 1921, featuring the world famous Little Angels Symphony Orchestra of Guangzhou, China. Major event sponsors included the Academy of Art, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Bill Lee, and also many generous donors to make this event successful. With a matching gift of $35,000.00, we have raised over $85,000.00!
The full orchestra featured 88 students, ages 8 to 14, performing classical opera and Chinese and Chinese minority folk songs, love songs, and symphonic suites, and was led by noted conductor and music director DanPing Ho. The concert was conducted in the beautiful first cathedral of San Francisco, Old St. Mary’s Cathedral, on the corner of Grant Avenue and California Streets.
The Little Angels Symphony Orchestra performed to numerous standing ovations. Their selections included Verdi’s Opera “La Forza Del Sestino,” folk songs from Tibet and the Dance of the Yao Minority, and a selection of Chinese love songs that provided a lively and loving amorous feeling. For their encore, they gave a rousing Star Wars-themed medley of inspirational music.
The event was held to bring the recent suspension of operations of St. Mary’s School by the Archdiocese of San Francisco to the forefront, as the school’s mission is to serve the Chinese community, and especially in helping new immigrant families learn English and adjust to their new life in America. The school still operates a preschool, but the hope is to lift the suspension and introduce a kindergarten and some early grades within the next year to accommodate those graduating preschool students.
Friends of St. Mary’s School is committed to raising additional funds as a reserve to cover initial operating expenses for the future re-opening of St. Mary’s School. Despite the closure of the kindergarten to 8th grade program for this year, supporters, alumni and parents of St. Mary’s School are continuing to receive applications for the 2017-18 school year and hope to make their case to the Archdiocese of San Francisco that they offer an affordable and meaningful Chinese bilingual program to families in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area.
