The goal of the School of Photography is to develop technically and aesthetically sound photographers, capable of successfully competing in the marketplace with a cohesive portfolio that has their personal signature in every image. Established in 1929, Academy of Art University is the largest accredited private art and design school in the US with over 17,000 students throughout San Francisco as well as nationally and internationally through the online degree program.

A note about the work:

My work spans the spectrum between “straight photography” to delicately layered digital compositions. I’m inspired by small moments that quietly transform what’s in front of us—an alleyway remade by a shaft of light, or the grace revealed in the curve of a tree’s branches.

I’m drawn to the unconventional beauty of the everyday and to the wonder that appears when we look a little closer: the tension and harmony of natural and manmade forms, the crisp angles beside organic flow.

Through photography and digital collage, I follow those juxtapositions until they become something more than a scene—something that feels like presence, like transcendence.

I’m always searching for that instant when the quotidian landscape opens into something deeper, and for the chance to bring beauty into the world in a way that inspires reflection.

Join us Friday at 10:00 am for guest artist Magali Gauthier!

Magali Gauthier is a San Francisco-based multimedia journalist, artist and photographer whose work focuses on the human impact on the environment and the solutions emerging to address climate change.

She started shooting on film around a decade ago and, in 2018, she taught herself how to lift Polaroid emulsions by watching YouTube tutorials.

Today, she creates emulsion collages made up of anywhere from a dozen to hundreds of Polaroid fragments, and brings her emulsion lift practice into her darkroom and cyanotype work. She works from her home studio and Harvey Milk Photo Center.

Lecture is hosted by artist and educator Janett Perez.

PH 699AD Advanced Darkroom/PH 499AD Advanced Darkroom
This advanced film and darkroom course develops students’ ability to produce exhibition- and publication-quality photographic work. Students apply advanced exposure, processing, printing, and presentation techniques using 35 mm, medium-format, and 4 × 5 cameras while analyzing, evaluating, and refining their work to create a professional-quality portfolio of finished black-and-white prints. (This course is cross-listed with PH 499AD.)
