Curiosity takes flight! ✈️☁️

Our Sun Room students recently brought their space science studies beyond the classroom with a field trip to Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos.

At Synergy, learning means exploring, asking questions, and discovering the world together. Through museum exploration and a hands-on workshop on weather patterns and cloud formation, they connected their classroom learning to the skies above.

Thank you Hiller Aviation Museum for a wonderful visit!

Stories connect us—to one another, to new perspectives, and to the world beyond our classrooms.

Synergy’s 7th and 8th graders welcomed graphic novelist Thien Pham for conversations about storytelling, identity, and technology.

Seventh graders explored his memoir Family Style, which traces his childhood immigration from Vietnam through food and memory. Eighth graders discussed Mind vs. Machine, his collaboration with Steve Sheinkin about the historic chess match between Garry Kasparov and IBM’s Deep Blue.

Connecting students with the people behind the books brings learning to life and invites curiosity about the many ways we tell our stories.

Thank you, Thien, for sharing yours!

Friday afternoons are for exploring something new! ✨

Synergy’s middle school electives give students time to follow their curiosity, build skills, and learn together through hands-on experiences.

This round includes crystal jewelry making, journalism, the art of clowning, volleyball, theater tech, zine-making, photography, juggling, and pickleball. From creative expression to teamwork on the court, there’s plenty to discover!

Electives meet every Friday through mid-November. 💛

Exploring outer space, one Oreo at a time! 🌙✨

For their first science unit, Sun Room students (grades 2/3) explored outer space and the phases of the moon—with a sweet twist! Using Oreos to model each phase, students turned an abstract concept into something they could see, shape, and even taste.

Learning by doing makes room for curiosity, discovery, and shared “aha!” moments—and eating the Oreos was a pretty delicious way to wrap up the exploration! 🍪

Big Buddies + Little Buddies 💚💕

One of the special ways we build community at Synergy is through cross-age learning and connection. At our Big Buddy–Little Buddy Assembly, Rainbow and Sun Room students met their middle school buddies—building relationships that give younger students someone to look up to while giving older students opportunities to practice leadership, empathy, and responsibility.

It’s cooperation in action and a beautiful reminder that at Synergy, we learn not only alongside one another, but from one another.

leadership

8th Grade Farm School is Synergy’s unique Rites of Passage program — a week in nature where students build leadership and deepen connection through experience. From team-building activities to a solo night, they set goals, reflect, and take on individual and group challenges. By taking initiative, listening, collaborating, and supporting one another, students discover their strengths and learn how their leadership contributes to the health of the whole community.

What happens when you give curious kids a few mirrors and a little light? 💡

The Rainbow Room visited Mission Science Workshop in the Excelsior to explore light and reflection. Students played with mirrors, watched how their reflections changed, and built their own kaleidoscopes.

At Synergy, learning goes beyond finding the answer. It’s about asking questions, trying things out, and discovering what you can create along the way 🌈

That’s a wrap! Farm School is one of Synergy’s most beloved traditions that takes learning beyond the classroom and into the world.

At Synergy, we don’t just teach our kids what to think—we help them learn how to think, while giving them the experiences and space to explore, discover and express who they want to be in the world.

Farm School is at the heart of Synergy’s approach to progressive education in action: a week in the Mendocino redwoods where our middle schoolers learn by doing, exploring, creating, questioning, collaborating—and getting a little dirty along the way.

Because education is about more than what our kids know or can read in a textbook. It’s about raising curious, compassionate, critical thinkers who know how to engage with each other and the world around them.

Who says playdates are just for kids? ✨

During Synergy’s recent Curriculum Nights, we opened our doors after hours—and while the kids enjoyed an evening of play with free childcare, the grown-ups had a playdate of their own!

Families stepped inside their children’s classrooms, connected with teachers, explored what students are learning and creating, and experienced Synergy’s hands-on approach to progressive education. They also heard directly from our incredible specialist teachers in learning support, art, music, drama, PE, and Spanish.

And perhaps most fun of all? Parents and caregivers had the chance to meet, mingle, and build community with one another.

Founded in 1973 as a teachers’ cooperative, Synergy School nurtures the intellectual, creative, and emotional potential of every child within a community dedicated to diversity, inclusion, and social justice. Curriculum Nights gave our grown-ups a hands-on glimpse of what it looks like to put that mission into practice every day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us—and to the teachers and staff who brought Synergy’s learning, creativity, and community to life! 💜
