Holberton School was founded in San Francisco by Sylvain Kalache and Julien Barbier to solve a problem they observed all over the tech world: They had noticed aspiring software engineers would devote years to studying, sometimes accumulating over a hundred thousand dollars of student debt, and would still not have the skills necessary to find a job in software engineering. Sylvain and Julien decided to build a new school; one that taught students to think and learn like the best programmers, one that helped students develop soft skills to get them noticed in interviews and throughout their careers, and one with a curriculum developed to give students practical experience in developing real solutions. Since Holberton School opened its doors in 2016, the world’s most innovative companies have noticed. Graduates have found high-satisfaction employment at LinkedIn, Google, Tesla, Docker, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Pinterest, Genentech, Cisco, IBM, and more.

On October 9–10, Holberton Coding School in Puerto Rico joined the Summit as a partner sponsor at the San Juan Convention Center, alongside speakers from AWS, Databricks, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Microsoft, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon University and the World Economic Forum. The event was organized by PR AI Community, a nonprofit making AI education accessible across Puerto Rico.

Our community was involved throughout:

🧠 Students and alumni mentored teams during the 48-hour Hackathon focused on healthcare solutions for Puerto Rico

💻 Co-founder Adam Beguelin led a technical workshop on building with Codex

🤝 Our booth generated 60+ leads with hiring, internship and capstone partners, plus future students

✨ Cohort 27 alum Victor Diaz showcased his motion-to-sound-and-shapes project

🙌 6 students and alumni volunteered across production, speaker liaison and registration

From the operating theatre to frontend code 💻

Cienna Nguyen spent years as a registered nurse. With zero tech experience, she joined the very first cohort in Holberton School Australia .

Right after graduating, she was hired by RACV. Founded in 1903, RACV is one of Australia’s most trusted brands and its largest member organisation, with 2.2M+ members.

Four years later, she’s been promoted to Frontend Developer.

Her advice to career changers: Don’t sell yourself short. Your life experience counts. ✨

🇦🇺 Holberton School Australia has signed the NSW Digital Skills & Workforce Compact. ✍️

The pledge behind it is specific: by 2030, 20% of entry-level digital hires will come from alternative pathways, not only university degrees. The agreement was signed this week by Joe Squires with Jeremy Kurucz, A/Deputy Secretary, Education and Skills Reform at the NSW Department of Education. It places our Australian campus alongside Microsoft , Accenture , IBM , Salesforce , , TAFENSW and more than 50 other partners across industry, government and education.

Holberton Australia’s part is the talent. Over the last three years, nurses, teachers, tradespeople and hospitality workers have built their way into tech through the campus. 🛠️ 🚀

Tech talent doesn’t come from one route. This pledge commits employers to hiring like it.
