The great California egg crisis 01/24/2023

Jamie of Fog City Gardener was recently included in an SF Examiner article about the merits of urban chicken keeping and it's relationship to the current egg crisis.

The great California egg crisis Prices are high due to the avian flu and a new cage-free law. Will backyard coops proliferate?

It’s been a slow, cold, and rainy start to this year’s Magnificent Magnolias season (which we’re not mad at…) but the sun has come out and the first magnolias are starting to follow suit!
🌸💗☀️
It’s still early and this pictured Magnolia campbellii just inside the Main Gate off the Great Meadow is leading the bloom as it does almost every year. The other species Magnolia campbellii that we typically see as part of the first wave of flowers are still just warming up. Looking like a little overnight rain tonight and then a run of sun that could move things along quickly… come check the first flowers now and stay tuned for much more to come!
☀️💗🌸
The first significant wave of flowers usually comes later in January and peak bloom is historically in early to mid-February—stay tuned to our website and here for the latest bloom updates: sfbg.org/magnolias

It's season 🍅 and while the world continues to challenge us daily, the keep growing. The strange combination of fog 🌁 and wildfire smoke necessitated the making of our easy Creamy (No Cream)
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 onion, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
4 cups chopped tomatoes
3 slices bread, cubed
¼ cup chopped fresh basil
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons (vegan) butter
2 cups chicken or veggie broth
Sallt and pepper to taste
Heat oil in a Dutch oven or heavy stockpot over medium-low heat; cook and stir onion and garlic in hot oil until tender, about 5 mins. Add tomatoes to onion mixture, crushing with a potato masher. Stir bread, basil, and brown sugar into tomato mixture and simmer until bread is completely saturated and starts to break down, about 10 mins. Immersion blend (or do batches in blender) add butter. Return soup to Dutch oven over medium heat; add broth and simmer until heated through about 5 minutes. Enjoy with some &

The world is hard. But we try to anchor ourselves in the small kindnesses we can give to each other. did a second round. Giving our to elderly neighbors. Mrs. S (last picture) was a school teacher in for 30 yrs and continues to watch over our neighborhood. All she can say about these moments is that we gotta hold each other up. She's a strong who never let the world take her dignity and her faith in humanity...here's hoping my kids learn from her example. @ San Francisco, California
