Sometimes the best way to get a student working independently is to make sure we don’t ask for independence too soon. 👏

Try I do → We do → You do.

👩‍🏫 I do: Model the new word or skill clearly. Add TPR, underline it, explain it, and let the student hear what you want them to do.

🤝 We do: Practice it together when it comes up again.

⭐ You do: Give the student a chance to take over. Circle the word, ask them to read, and wait before jumping in to help.

And if they still need support? That’s okay. Give a small prompt and let them keep going.

The goal isn’t just repetition. It’s gradually giving the student more responsibility until they can say, read, or do it on their own.

🌕 The Mid-Autumn Festival is a special time for many of our students and their families!

A little cultural knowledge can give you an easy opportunity to connect during class. Ask your student if they celebrate, what kind of mooncakes they like, or what their family does together. Even a simple question shows your student that you’re interested in the things that are important to them. 🥮❤️

And if your bookings look a little different around the holiday, don’t worry! Many families may be traveling, gathering together, or adjusting their usual schedules.

“Do you understand?”

It’s an easy question to ask in class. The problem is, it’s also really easy for a student to say, “Yes!” even when they’re still confused.

Instead, try asking your student to show you what they understand.

1️⃣ Use the new vocabulary
Ask them to use the word in a sentence or give you an example.

2️⃣ Make it visual
For younger or lower-level students, ask them to point to or circle the correct picture.

3️⃣ Have them explain it
With older or more advanced students, ask, “Can you tell me what this means in your own words?”

These checks don't have to take much time. A few extra seconds can tell you whether your student is ready to move on or needs a little more support.

Instead of only asking, “Do you understand?” give your student an opportunity to show you.

Say hi to Teacher Handa 👋✨

For Handa, some of the most rewarding moments in teaching happen when a student begins to believe in themselves. 💛

She loves creating a positive, interactive classroom where students feel comfortable speaking English, making mistakes, and celebrating their progress. One of her most memorable experiences was watching a student who was initially very shy slowly transform into a confident learner who participated enthusiastically, answered in complete sentences, and smiled throughout class.

That experience reinforced something Handa brings into every lesson: patience, encouragement, and genuine connection can make a huge difference in a student's confidence.

Her advice for new VIPTeachers? Stay positive, celebrate the little wins, and don't worry about being perfect. Confidence comes with experience!

Gul had wanted to teach online for years, and when she learned she would be moving to South Korea to teach English, she knew it was finally time to take the leap with VIPTeacher. 💛

Some vocabulary words are easy to teach with a prop, picture, or TPR. Then there are those words that make you stop and think, “How am I going to explain this one?”

A little planning can make those harder or more abstract words much easier to teach.

1️⃣ Plan for the tricky words
Preview the vocabulary before class. Which words can you show easily? Which ones might need a synonym, example, picture, gesture, or extra explanation?

2️⃣ Teach words in context
Instead of always teaching vocabulary as isolated words, put new language into a phrase or sentence. Context can help students understand how the word is actually used.

3️⃣ Connect to something they already know
New vocabulary is easier to understand when you attach it to familiar language. If your student already knows “book” and “crayon,” those familiar objects can help you introduce new colors, descriptions, or other concepts.

4️⃣ Focus on the words carrying the meaning
Your student doesn't always need to understand every single word to understand the message. Help them identify the important words first.

When a word is difficult to teach, you don't necessarily need a bigger explanation. Sometimes you just need a better connection.

Your students often take their energy cues from you, and that doesn't mean you need to be at 100% excitement for 25 minutes. 😅

The key is variation.

1️⃣ Change your voice
Use a little more excitement when something is new, surprising, or fun.

2️⃣ Change your expression
Let your face react to what's happening. Curiosity, excitement, surprise, and encouragement can all help pull a student's attention back to you.

3️⃣ Change your pace
Try slowing down and leaning toward the camera before an important or thoughtful question. That shift alone can signal, “Pay attention. Something is coming.”

4️⃣ Change your gestures
Movement can add energy and meaning without adding more teacher talk.

Teacher energy isn't about being loud or over-the-top. It's about giving students something to respond to.

Try changing your voice, expression, pace, or movement in your next class and see what happens to your student's energy, too.

When you're teaching a new word with TPR, consistency matters.

Watch how can keeps the same motion every single time in this lesson. The teacher pairs that motion with props and familiar action verbs to help the student connect the language to meaning.

1️⃣ Start with something concrete
“It can fly.” The parrot gives the student something to see while the TPR gives can its own consistent movement.

2️⃣ Repeat the pattern with new actions
“It can run.”
“It can jump.”
“It can swim.”

The animal changes. The action changes. The TPR for can stays the same.

3️⃣ Take away the props
Once the pattern is established, the teacher can use TPR alone to ask:
“Can you swim?”
“Can you jump?”
“Can you fly?”

4️⃣ Add the contrast
“Yes, I can!” uses the familiar can motion, while crossed arms visually reinforce cannot.

Consistent TPR gives students a visual cue they can recognize again and again, even as the vocabulary and questions around it change.
