Project Censored was founded in 1976 by journalism professor Carl Jensen. He retired in 1996, and from then through 2009, the project was directed by sociology professor Peter Phillips. Mickey Huff, history professor at Diablo valley College, became the Project Director in early 2010. Phillips continues to support the organization as President of the Media Freedom Foundation.
