five years ago today i taught my first class. i don't remember much from it outside of feeling mostly adrenaline and fear of saying the wrong things. five years later, the adrenaline has been traded for confidence and expertise; fear of saying the wrong things have dissipated into knowing that i can always quickly self-correct and have a laugh.
.
thousands of downdogs later, here i am. thank you to the thousands of students i've taught, to my teachers and colleagues for giving me the opportunity to learn again and again, and to yoga for being an omniscient, everlasting practice.
.
see you at van mission today, 430pm. message me for a guest pass any time! schedule via link in bio.

uploaded an extended version of my set from last friday. i put tracks in there i've been wanting to experiment with and i love how it turned out ✨ there's some jungle, garage, electronic, chill, lo-fi, deep house and more. give it a listen via the link in my bio and lmk what you think! and don't worry, i still very much like and teach yoga despite what instagram displays!

i generally don't include chaturunga during the first 15-20 minutes of class. why? there are a few reasons for this.
.
prone backbends like cobra, locust, and sphinx all offer something different in terms of engaging the back body. with the exception of locust, there is a pulling forward, lengthening quality that facilitates length along the spine which is useful in many other poses. doing solely upward dog is like only doing high lunge in your practice.
.
secondly, chaturunga is done incorrectly all the time. it's hard to adequately break down chaturunga outside of a 1:1 or workshop setting so offering alternate backbends gives students a choice on what they want to do in their vinyasas.
.
so there you have it. please ensure your shoulders don't dip too slow, god forbid you do the swan dive through it, adduct your elbows, and don't be afraid to lower your knees down so your upper body isn't too taxed.
.
see you sundays at 2pm at van mission!
