Meet the Teachers: Brandon Yuok

1. Class title: To Meeting New People

2. Major: Political Science

3. Hometown: Temecula

4. Why is the topic important to understand? We've learned to categorize individuals. Categorization leads to assumptions. False assumptions can turn into prejudice. Persistent prejudice leads to an unhealthy society. By meeting different people, we can learn to humanize individuals, and thus, become tolerant of one another.

5. Howโ€™d you get involved in EXCO? I took Cesar's class, "Social Movements and Digital Technology". Later, Cesar asked if I wanted to teach a class, and my mindset is always "why not?".

6. Whatโ€™s an interesting fact about yourself? I love to play hacky sack

Meet the Teachers: Cesar Plascencia

1. Class title: Existence, Freedom, and Meaning: A Delve into Existentialist Thought

2. Major: History & Political Science

3. Hometown: Whittier, CA

4. Why do you want to teach this class? I read Myth of Sisyphus at a turbulent time of my life, it deals with the question why one should not commit su***de in a life devoid of meaning, and I found that one can use philosophy as a means of working through personal issues. I want to share that experience with others and have conversations on some of lifeโ€™s more significant questions. What does it mean to live authentically? What are the ethical implications of freedom? What is the meaning of life? By asking ourselves these questions we explore modes of thinking not typical of everyday conversation; modes of thinking that can be healing.

5. How do you like your coffee? I love a good Cafรฉ au Lait

6. Whatโ€™re you listening to right now? My favorite band is Real Estate, but Iโ€™ve also been listening to some Beach Fossils, and Horsebeach.
