University Ministry at the University of San Francisco

University Ministry creates opportunities for University of San Francisco students, faculty, staff, and alumni to explore principles of Ignatian Spirituality and apply them to their studies, careers, and personal lives. In so doing, we inspire members of the USF community to experience inner freedom, realize the fullness of their humanity, and live lives of hope, passion, integrity, and purpose.

What is the Igantian Year?

On May 20, 2021 the Society of Jesus and the entire Ignatian family began the worldwide celebration of the Ignatian Year.

On that date, 500 years ago, St. Ignatius Loyola was wounded by a cannonball while defending the city of Pamplona. For him, it was a major failure and forced a change of plans from the riches and worldly exploits he envisioned for his future. However, this failure also started a process of conversion, which led Ignatius to bigger dreams, no longer centered on himself, but rather on God. It helped him to see all things new in Christ.

In a letter announcing the Ignatian Year, Jesuit Father General Arturo Sosa wrote that we celebrate this year to remind us of the daily opportunity to experience a new conversion.

The Ignatian Year will conclude on July 31, 2022, on the Feast of St. Ignatius.

University Ministry is looking for half-day First Year Retreat leaders on Monday August 15 and Tuesday August 16!

As part of Student Life’s newly-reimagined and expanded First Year Orientation, all first year students will enjoy an on-campus half day retreat sponsored by University Ministry on either Monday, August 15, or Tuesday, August 16. This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with and get to know the newly admitted “Class of 2026” at USF, and share with them what it means to be part of the USF Community.

Volunteers from all faith traditions and backgrounds and those still searching for their religious identity are welcome and strongly encouraged to volunteer for the First-Year Retreat. We strive to provide an environment where all students feel comfortable exploring their faith and what they believe.

In order to serve this great population of first year students (1500+), we are in need of volunteers who can support small group facilitation and check-in. If you are interested in offering your time, please fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf5qE8dTSrflYqK0Ffhe5lEyjNALtLL-I8etS6sMqKQw3YADA/viewform?

The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs is hosting a two-day conference with theologians in the Philippines, United States, Australia, and around the world to examine Christianity in the Philippines through a postcolonial theological lens. The “post” here is not used in the temporal sense, as if colonialism has ended, but rather, suggests the desire to go beyond the colonial in all its contemporary manifestations.

The year 2021 marks the five-hundredth anniversary of Christianity’s entry into the Philippines. With over 90% in the country identifying as Christian and with more than eight million Filipin@s all over the world, Filipin@s are a significant force reshaping global Christianity. This anniversary thus not only calls for celebration but also reflection and critique.

Join Georgetown University and The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs on February 8-9, 2022!
