The Indigenous Arts Coalition began as a San Francisco Art Institute student group founded by Nizhoni Ellenwood and Richard Castaneda in 2008. Castaneda and Ellenwood created IAC in order to help foster a voice and create a community for artists of Native American Indian and Indigenous backgrounds occupying the Bay Area. Since 2008, the IAC has grown from a group based mainly out of SFAI to a group reaching out and collaborating with the Bay Area Native American Indian community at large.
