Congratulations to Thomas Fay '06 and Stephanie Shirkey '12 on their appointments to California's superior courts! Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Fay to the Orange County Superior Court and Shirkey received an interim appointment to begin serving immediately as a judge in the El Dorado County Superior Court.

Top of the Game: Dion Cominos '88, recognized for an amazing 20 years the firmwide managing partner at Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, LLP, will receive the Distinguished Leader honor at the California Legal Awards on June 24.

Making impact: Labor and employment specialist Natalie Alameddine ’13 of Blank Rome, who is also co-chair of the UC Law SF West L.A. Alumni Chapter, and business litigator Brianna Howard ’16 of Ballard Spahr will be honored as Lawyers on the Fast Track at the 2026 California Legal Awards, sponsored by The Recorder and law.com.

UC Law SF’s Aaron Cera '23, specializing in AI-related litigation and antitrust at the Saveri Law Firm, and litigator Isabella Granucci ’23 of Holland & Knight, are finalists for Most Promising Newcomer.

John Pavolotsky, a partner at Stoel Rives LLP who specializes in technology and AI-related legal matters, and Svetlana Matt ’12, director of public policy at Dish Network, examined Colorado’s landmark AI law and what it signals for future regulation during LexLab’s Law and AI Certificate program in March. Over the course of a week, participants learned from 20 instructors working at the forefront of AI. The program, to be held again in July, is designed to help lawyers understand the evolving legal, technological, and policy landscape surrounding AI and navigate its complex, often ambiguous implications across jurisdictions.

Ben Whitlach ’20, director of customer success and legal specialist at Alumni, a venture capital portfolio management software company, said the program provides a clear understanding of the technology and its practical applications for lawyers. “It helped demystify how modern AI systems work and how they are beginning to transform legal workflows,” Whitlach said. “What I found most valuable was the practical perspective on how lawyers can thoughtfully integrate AI into their daily work.”
