💕 How to Communicate with Professors and Lecturers (Without Feeling Awkward)

One of the biggest shifts from high school to college is realizing that professors are not going to chase you down. They expect you to ask questions, advocate for yourself, and show that you’ve put thought into your work.

The good news? Building strong relationships with your professors can lead to better grades, stronger recommendation letters, research opportunities, internships, and mentorship.

Here are a few things that helped me:

✨ Show what you’ve already tried before asking for help
✨ Ask specific questions instead of saying “I don’t understand”
✨ Stay professional, even if a professor seems strict
✨ Focus on the course requirements rather than their personality
✨ Speak with confidence and clarity

A simple message like:

“I reviewed the assignment and I think I should focus on X. I tried connecting it to Y concept, but I’m not sure if I’m approaching it correctly. Could you let me know if I’m on the right track?”

…will usually get you a much more helpful response.

Sometimes the toughest professors end up teaching you the most. They push you to become more organized, independent, and resilient.

Save this for the next time you need to email a professor or attend office hours. 🌸

the best corporate advice I’ve heard from every level 💕🐚🩰

I asked people across different stages of corporate life for the best advice they’ve learned, and honestly one of the biggest lessons is that growth looks different at every level.

Here’s the short version:

an analyst / associate 3 years in
doing your job well is not enough. make your work visible, ask better questions, send follow ups, and build real relationships with the people already around you.

a senior associate / VP track professional
intentionality matters. learn how decisions get made, write short clear emails, and stop over explaining every thought.

an officer / senior leader 15 to 20+ years in
be thoughtful about grad school and focus on building credibility, reputation, and judgment that other people can speak on too.

someone in client facing corporate / sales strategy
focus on the client, understand buying influences, and remember strong people do not just sell, they build trust.

a director 10+ years in
what separates people over time is judgment. learn how to simplify, prioritize, and speak differently to different audiences.

the biggest takeaway?
your title grows when your judgment, visibility, communication, and trust do too 💕

A lot of students think standing out in internship applications means having the most experience, the most leadership titles, or the perfect resume.

But a lot of the time, that is not what actually moves an application forward.

What helps is reducing doubt.

Can the recruiter picture you on the team?
Do you seem clear, coachable, thoughtful, and genuinely interested?
Does your application give proof, not just claims?

That is why these tips matter.

Having a proof-of-interest asset helps because it shows you did more than say you like a field. You actually explored it. Sticking to three stories helps because most students answer too vaguely and do not make themselves memorable. Understanding that “showing experience” is not always the main goal helps you focus on what employers are really looking for early on: potential, reliability, and fit. And researching employee networks can give you a better understanding of a company’s culture, values, and support systems so your application sounds more specific and intentional.

Hopefully this helps you approach internship applications in a smarter way, not just a more stressful one.
