Uncovering Asian and Asian American Solidarity: a Teach-in & Testimonial Space
- Tuesday, April 27th -
11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Asian and Asian American students, staff, and faculty, and community allies are invited to share space together in solidarity and to process the continued experience of increased anti-Asian violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. James Zarsadiaz, Associate Professor of History & Director of the Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program, will provide some grounding history on anti-Asian racism in the United States and a panel of student leaders will reflect on the need for solidarity. There will be a testimonial space for Asian and Asian American community members to individually share their stories and be heard and seen as well.
This event is a collaboration between USF's Asian and Asian American Staff/Faculty Council (AAASFC) and the Asian Pacific American Studies program (APAS).
Additional USF co-sponsors include: the Cultural Centers, Culturally Focused Clubs Council (CFCC), Office of Diversity Engagement and Community Outreach (DECO), the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good, University Ministry, and Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program (YPSP).

Check out this interview featuring Professor Zarsadiaz on the surge of anti-Asian violence in the United States in Rappler, a Philippines-based news outlet founded by journalist and free speech activist Maria Ressa.
For Fil-Am youth, fighting Asian hate in the US means breaking silence
Their parents worked hard for a good life in the US, but now they’re in danger of being attacked over coronavirus stereotypes. The kids won't tolerate any of it.

Longtime YPSP faculty member, Fr. Sonny Manuel, recently retired from USF. The Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program remains grateful for Fr. Sonny's service and devotion to the program, our students, and the wider university community. Here is a message from Fr. Sonny:
I am grateful for collaborating with YPSP over the years especially on the early immersion trips to the Philippines, establishing the Casa Bayanihan Program in Manila and recruiting the participation and support of faculty and students, the reception YPSP hosted for Ateneo President Jet Villarin, S.J., the annual Simbang Gabi masses, etc. I'm glad for the home and welcome I always received from Jay Gonzalez (first YPSP director) and James Zarsadiaz (current YPSP director) and YPSP colleagues.
I am now beginning a new post-retirement venture - a private clinical practice. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in therapy with a psychologist familiar with our culture and heritage.
I will keep you and your efforts in my prayers!
Blessings and be well,
Sonny
