Gateway Public Schools Measuring success one student at a time. They founded Gateway High School, a college preparatory, public charter school in San Francisco.

In 1998, a group of six parents had the dream of creating a school that would be a gateway to college for all students regardless of race, income, or learning style. Since then, more than 96% of our graduates have gone on to colleges across the country and the world (double the statewide rate). In 2011, we expanded our model with the addition of a middle school. At Gateway Public Schools, we believe that all students can learn at high levels and that all students learn differently. We are excited to announce the appointment of Aaron Watson as Gateway's Executive Director. The Gateway Public Schools Board of Trustees enthusiastically voted to appoint him at its most recent meeting, reflecting the Board's full confidence in Aaron’s leadership and ability to steward Gateway’s mission and values in this next stage of the schools’ history.

Aaron has served as Acting Executive Director since July 1, 2026, but his connection and commitment to Gateway runs deep. He joined Gateway 21 years ago as a classroom teacher at Gateway High School, grew into the role of founding principal of Gateway Middle School, and most recently served as chief of schools and programs. This is also not Aaron’s first time leading the organization: he served as Acting Executive Director in 2023–24. Aaron has been a steady and trusted presence through many chapters of Gateway’s history.

Few people know our students, staff, and mission as well as Aaron. His leadership is student-centered, with a focus on equitable outcomes and a deep commitment to supporting the educators who make that possible.

🧬 Big questions. Meaningful conversations. Real-world impact.

Our AP Biology, our students participated in a Socratic Seminar exploring the ethical implications surrounding the use of Henrietta Lacks’ cells in biomedical research—without her or her family’s consent.
Students thoughtfully examined questions about bias, informed consent, ownership of biological materials, medical ethics, and compensation, including:
🔬 Do companies or universities have the right to patent discoveries made using a patient’s tissues or genes without consulting them?
⚖️ Should Henrietta Lacks’ family be compensated for discoveries made using her cells?
💭 Was there bias in the way Henrietta Lacks was treated?
🌎 Most importantly, what can we, as a community of Gateway students, DO to take action?
We’re proud to see our students engage in thoughtful dialogue, challenge perspectives, and connect science to ethics, equity, and social responsibility. 💙🧬
