Why have parts of normally blue San Francisco Bay appeared as reddish brown since July? The culprit, scientists and public health experts suspect, is a harmful algal bloom caused by a microscopic marine organism, Heterosigma akashiwo, which is known to turn tides red. Not considered a serious right now, the bloom is nonetheless a warning signal about a potential threat to the Bay.
