Meet our new magnificent weaving instructor Dav1!

Dav1 (pronounced Dah-vee) is a textiles artist, performer, farmer, and fashion stylist. Dav1’s foundation for skill sharing comes from their extensive experience in farming across the US with small-scale organic productions growing nutrient-dense food and teaching children in the communities about plants and soil health. At the root of their teaching practice and expertise is a reverence for the land, materials, global citizenship, and generations prior.

Currently, as a Textiles major and writing minor at California College of the Arts, they focus on the ecology of clothing, analog and digital weaving, natural dyeing, mechanical knitting, plus the historical allegory of cloth and clothes. They are ecstatic to share their passion for weaving with the students at Chris Babcock Art Prep.

Dav1 has been mentored in Textiles under Josh Faught, Deidreck Brackens, Kat Karnacky, Erin Algeo, and Lynda Grose- all major influencers in the contemporary field of craft and theory.

Dav1 has worked as an artist assistant with Vallerie Mallorie on live body castings for Burning Man. They are part of a ‘dragonfly-positive resistance performance art’ project with Hannah Kahn, circus educator, and Christina Lewis from the Clown School of San Francisco. Dav1’s relationship with performance fosters a sense of wonder, joy, and creative expression with all whom they interact with.

Dav1 is trained in Restorative Justice, Non-Violent Communication, and has over 4 years of experience as a YMCA camp counselor, plus they have embarked on numerous leadership training with Outward Bound.

Dav1’s passion for connecting with young artists is bridging generational gaps through the wonderful world of weaving, which ultimately is an act of slowing down, connecting with the threads of our minds and bodies to create functional, sustainable, fine art together, making our world a better place.

I enjoyed an evening watching divas walk the runway wearing their brilliant Indian inspired fashion designs at Catwalk for Charities created by the genius designer Monique Zhang and supported by her creative partner, CA State Treasurer Fiona Ma to raise funds for two vital missions (1) Miracle University (2) IANGEL: The International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law.

Overflowing with gratitude for our incredible community! A huge thank you to the honorable CA State Treasurer Fiona Ma and fashion designer Monique Zhang for supporting Chris Babcock Art Prep at our Sip and Paint night. Thank you to all our friends who came out to paint and support our mission!

A special shout-out to Blake Barrios for leading our students in creating a stunning lion painting for Fiona. And to our amazing instructors Kyle Fradkin, Vivienne Legg, Mookie Margolis, and Owen Chee, thank you for your guidance!

So much love and thanks to Carrie Chee and Michelle Snyder for their support. We are blown away by the incredible generosity of Carrie and Brian Chee, who donated $4,500!

Who wants to match this amazing gift and help us empower future artists?

At the heart of CBAP is our beloved grumble of pugs—yes, “grumble” is the official term for a group of three or more pugs! Ours includes Vincey, Bubbie, and Tulip.🐾
A particularly unique and exciting part of learning at Chris Babcock Art Prep is the hands on access to our emotional support pugs throughout the lesson or camp day with an overload on cuteness!

Jude, Age 9, Self-Portrait, Colored Pencils on Paper.

Jude’s Mom shared with us that Jude has tried a few highly recommend art classes around SF, but she explained to Chris that Chris Babcock Art Prep is the only studio where Jude felt she was allowed to pursue her own creative ideas while still gaining rigorous technical training to allow both her creativity and artistic talent to flourish.

It was a pleasure to welcome California State Treasurer Fiona Ma to my nonprofit recently. I’ve attached a photo from her visit, where she’s holding my children’s book “NO MOON, NO MILK!” (published by Random House & Scholastic). The royalties from this book, which sold over a million copies, were instrumental in funding the start of Chris Babcock Art Prep.

Treasurer Ma is a dedicated supporter of arts education, and she honors the memory of her mother, a former public art teacher in San Francisco, by raising funds for small nonprofit art studios in the city.
