That student asked me to share more stories because he said “it was the most interesting part.” It reminded me of something we seem to forget often - students are looking for that connection with a trusted adult. Sharing our own stories is how we create that connection. I’ve learned this throughout the thousands of students I’ve worked with, that when I’m vulnerable first, they’re willing to be vulnerable too.

That girl who called me a bitch on day one became one of the most engaged students by the end.

She wasn’t difficult, she was just testing me to see if I’d actually show up for her or just kick her out like everyone else does.

The students everyone has written off are the ones who need this work the most. They haven’t had an adult create space for them yet.

When you don’t react the way they expect you to, and you hold the boundary without rejecting them, they start to believe you might actually mean it.
